Why doesn't my Mac have iPhoto, iMovie or GarageBand?

So I have a fairly old MacBook Pro that got passed down to me several years ago. I know most Macs come with iLIfe (iPhoto, iMovie, Garage Band, etc) but they are not listed under my applications and I really don't want to pay for them since I feel like they would've been on here at some point. How do I go about downloading them back onto my computer? Going to the Apple store is not exactly ideal because I'm abroad for the semester.

Update:

I have the most recent OS on it by the way.

They will be on the installation discs that came with the Mac. If you do not have them then you will need to buy fresh copies. I am guessing they wiped the hard drive before passing it on to you but did not reinstall the iLife software.

With your macbook you should have 2 installation disks.

Disk 1 has the OS on it while disk 2 has all the iLife applications.

If you don't have the discs anymore then you will have to buy an iLife 09 disk on eBay or Amazon.

You have a fairly old MacBook Pro in that case today's Mac OS won't install on it, Mac don't make their operating systems backwards compatible for their old computers, that's how they make their money forcing users to upgrade to the latest systems. But all is not lost you could install Linux on it. and still do the same things you would be able to do had you got the latest mac os/x

People think there is only two operating systems in the world Mac and windows, the truth is there are over 100 others that are far superior and advanced, Android and Chrome are just two of these Free operating systems, you can check out the latest Feb 2013 releases here
