Confused about blood A1C?

I had blood testing done on February 15th. I finally got my results today. I was being tested for diabetes and stuff. I had A1C done, my Cholesterol and Lipos tested and all that. I was told that the doctor wanted to see me because I'm am (am almost borderline anemic or something) and wanted to discus my diet. When I asked what my hemoglobin was I was told 5.4 which freaked me out but she said it was normal.

What is going on here? With normal hemoglobin tests 5.4 should have me in the hospital. I'd love some input?

Hemoglobin A1c is usually short for Glycosolated Hemoglobin A1c. The 5.4 is what percentage of your Hemoglobin A1c is glycosolated, or attached to sugar. It is used as screening test for diabetes and to monitor blood sugar control in diabetics. 5.4% is normal.

Your hemoglobin level should be in g/dl and you're right that if your hemoglobin was 5.4 g/dl that would be problematically anemic.
