How to sedate my dog?

My dog is terrified of vets. He struggles and thrashes around so much that vets can't control him. We tried to have blood tests done and they couldn't take the blood. Even after mild sedation. Is there any way to knock him out with a tablet so that we can get the blood tests done?

Update:

Thanks Lizzie. The vet says there's nothing she can give us. Have tried 2 different vets. But I am in Singapore and everything is highly regulated here. If I know what to give him I can try and get the tablet from my home country.

Talk to your vet! Surely you could grind up a tablet and mix it with some canned food or other treat he would eat before you take him to the vet. Your vet could prescribe it and fill the prescription for you.
