Would you recommend Brighton as a place to visit?

We are planning a week long trip to London during Easter 2013 (with wife and 7 year old kid), and would like to make a day trip (or an overnight trip) somewhere. Would you recommend Brighton? Is is quiet or crowded at that time?

Is there some other place in less than 2 hrs train ride from London that you could recommend?

Also any tips to spend the Easter in London with a family are much appreciated.

Background info: I've been to England a couple of times, my family has not. Our daughter does not understand the language, so that may influence our choice of program..

Yes, the Isle of Wight is a good idea. It has more things for children than Brighton and the pace of life is a bit slower than on the mainland.

It would be nice break for you and your family! Plus the children might enjoy the (easy) passenger ferry journey and the little train you get on at the end of Ryde pier.

Then again, if you do just have a day or so, maybe Brighton or Eastbourne (more spacious, less busy and less crowded than Brighton) would be good for a daytrip.

Brighton is just 51 minutes away from London Victoria by frequent train. It will be crowded over Easter, has a beach (shingle not sand), quite a lot of entertainment for both kids and adults, good shopping, restaurants and history (Brighton Museum and the Royal Pavilion). It is close to the South Downs National Park and you can take an open top bus (route 75) from the centre of Brighton up to the Park's highest point at Devils Dyke. The downside of Brighton is that it has a huge nightclub scene in the West Street area that can produce an unpleasant atmosphere from mid evening onwards

I really think Bournemouth is far more family orientated. It has a huge sandy beach which is clean and well policed and again many places to eat and to shop. It takes 1 hour 50 minutes by the fastest train services from London Waterloo Station

In London your child would probably like the London Eye, the London Aquarium and the Imax Cinema all near Waterloo Station and the Natural History Museum in South Kensington

If you live in the U.K. consider getting a Family Railcard for big savings on your train journeys

I've never been to Brighton, but I've heard it's a nice seaside town. To be honest, I don't actually know when Easter is this year, but if it's soon I wouldn't recommend it. For the last week the temperature has been about -2 on average for the whole of southern England with FREEZING northerly (Siberian winds). Nobody has left their house, it's been that cold! Walking along the beach would be absolute madness! Saying that, if Easter is a while away, the temperatures should raise to about 10-15 Celsius which would be quite nice. But yeah, Brighton is a nice place from what I've heard.

Brighton will be busy, but certainly not as busy as London! Usually you only really have foreign tourists/students in London looking around, but during Easter you'll also have all the British families as well! It will be busy, but London truly is a brilliant world city.

These are the attractions you should definitely go to in my opinion:

British museum - absolutely huge, stone/marble atrium. Although it's called the British museum, they have special areas for different cultures eg Egyptian, Greek, Far East etc with some interactive stuff too.

Natural history museum - what 7 year old wouldn't be amazed at seeing a life-size dinosaur skeleton?

Science museum - all interactive. Very fun for kids (and parents too!).

Trafalgar Square - Nelson's colomb, the fountain, other iconic buildings

London eye - get a great view of London!

London westerd - see a great show!

Thames - take a tour along the Thames and see the likes of Downing Street, Buckingham palace, Tate Modern, MI5/6 (spying/British intelligence HQ), Tower Bridge etc

    --------

Could also go to Madame Tussaurds, V&A museum,

    --------

I know when you go on holiday you can't do it in the cheap, but it's worth noting that most major mueseums are free! The ones I've listed are certainly all free and are funded by charities (eg National Trust) and donations.

Brighton is a popular place for Londoners. Bournemouth is further west with nicer beaches. Sometimes Easter brings nice weather but the sea is still very cold.

For a bit of adventure, you could make it to the Isle of Wight. Take a train to Portsmouth and then a ferry to Ryde. Then take an Island Line train to Shanklin and stay in a lovely old fashioned seaside resort. It would take more than two hours but the ferry ride and Island Line train are fun.

not golfing classes please. we do not play golfing on your parks. try Stanmer Park or Withdean Park. a lot of dogs walkers there. you are able to also get some large walks on the South Downs, exceedingly in between Woodingdean and Kingston, it is about a three mile walk and has a superb pub on the right of it.
