if i amend my tax return to include college expenses for 2013 will this trigger an audit?
This is my son's first year in college, I was not aware that we could claim his book expenses for the fall and spring semester (2012-2013 school year) until after we filed. If I amend it to include these expenses, will it cause any problems with my return? We didn't itemize, We filed using 1040A, only claiming the education credits. I don't to mess up our return or trigger an audit.
thanks for the answers so far. when I said we didnt itemize, I meant we usually don't itemize our tax returns, we usually just do the standard deductions. I've used the same online tax prep program for the last four years, so it walked me through every step. After submitting my return, I realized i could have added his book expenses for the beginning of the 2013 spring semester. It'll add close to another $1000 to our refund, I just didn't know if it would be worth the trouble of amending now or just holding on to it and adding it to next years return. With all the new laws, I wanted to know what a professional would advise. I have receipts backing up everything we claimed for the education credit.

When your are worried about creating such problems for your self may be you should just forget about doing this for the 2012 tax year at this time in your life. And then the next tax filing season try and get the 2013 income tax return 1040 filled out CORRECTLY and completely for the 2013 tax year education tax benefits that you can qualify to claim for the 2013 tax year during the 2014 tax filing season.
And it could have been possible that you would not have needed to ITEMIZE for these other education amounts that you are thinking about for the 2012 tax year BUT who knows BUT you.
Hope that you find the above enclosed information useful.02/27/2013

To claim it, you'd have to amend your 2012 return. You can't claim expenses paid in 2012 on your 2013 return.

look on the checklist of asked information. whilst your amended return would have led to the audit, is the checklist limited to products that weren't on the unique return, however the amended one basically? i'm a splash questioned. Why would you are able to desire to hunt to discover those information? something you claimed on your tax return would desire to have been filed with your tax information or be handy. the way you describe it, you as much as date some thing with further foundation or expenditures making use of predicted numbers and that they talked approximately as your bluff and prefer to work out the quite information. Worst case, write back and state which you won't be able to discover them and prefer the amended return to be rejected in its entirety.

Probably not if your amended return is not out of line as far as expenses listed.
