What can I do with code?

I've recently began learning a little bit of code on codecademy.com, starting off with some javascript and now i'm completing the sections on HTML. It is fun and I am enjoying the problem solving and tasks but I have this feeling that the work I am doing is completely futile, I literally have no idea what I am learning, I understand it is 'useful', but is it useful for me, right now, when I don't even know how to carry my knowledge from that website to the outside world?

I will be going to study Physics in the UK (hopefully at Warwick) in september and will be learning either C or MATLAB, with no previous experience needed, so I understand delving into the basics of coding may help when I go to university, but is it useful right now?

I'm basically asking what I can do with the code I am learning on this website and whether it is going to be useful to me? I'm not really bothered about creating websites, but are there some cool uses that could enhance my time on computers if I manage to learn at least the basics of code?

Thank you in advance.

Update:

I already have university offers, so I don't need to increase my chance of getting into university with code.

I don't think that the javascript and HTML will necessarily help you directly, besides learning how web pages work. However, the experience will help you by applying it to other areas.

For example, javascript somewhat teaches you the basic constructs of programming like loops and conditionals and such. So when you go to learn C or MATLAB, you will already have previous knowledge of how those things work. Yes, C and MATLAB are totally different, but the underlying programming concepts are nearly the same. So you will already be one step ahead of everyone else. Also, HTML can be applied to creating and understanding XML files, which are beginning to be very popular today. Even the Android OS uses XML files for creating it's GUI!

So once you apply your knowledge in other areas (such as C), you will begin to see how it applies to the "real world". Hope this helped you and good luck!

Make a website! You know HTML and Javascript, and with a website you could do anything! Maybe make a website of your resumé?
