Accidentally Killed an Insect. Feeling Guilty. Help?

I was not trying to kill this insect. I was preparing a shower the other day, when I noticed that there was an insect there. Turning on the water, I noticed that the insect was not scampering away and even seemed to be approaching the water. Trying to save it, with noble intentions, I tried to pick it up. I grabbed it a few times, but it kept slipping away. Then, I grabbed it just a bit too firmly and placed it out. It has not moved for a whole day, and now I feel guilty, because it isn't moving, as if in a state of suspended animation. I even pour some water on it to see what would happen. Nothing. What should I do to stop feeling guilty.

I know that it is "just an insect", but I try to value all lives the same. I don't go around trying to hurt other creatures. I know that I probably end up killing many insects a day just by walking around, and that I've probably killed thousands over the course of my life both accidentally and on purpose. However, since becoming a vegetarian, I have ditched this "humans are superior to other species" idea and tried not to harm other living beings. I am not trying to be childish, but I honestly was not trying to harm it. Is there anything I can do to perhaps revive it. It wasn't even a large insect, but one of those small ones with a larger tail. I'm not a troll, just someone who tries not to hurt other things. Anything you can recommend would be helpful.

Most of us do the best that we can in our lives. In this case, don't wallow in it. Just vow to do better in the future & get on with your life.

All life, no matter how big or small, should be valued. I admire that you care for every living thing, no matter what. However, what's done is done. Insects are small, and easily killed. Everybody kills thousands of insects in their life.

There's no reason to feel guilty. It's true that humans are not, or should not, be superior over other animals. At the same time, we were made bigger and stronger for a reason. We will end many lives, insects or not. There is a natural balance, where the larger species hunts/kills the smaller. That's what keeps everything balanced, and stops overpopulation of other animals on Earth.

Always value life, of course. But don't feel guilty for a little accident, because it will happen everyday.

  • Hi Alex, Feeling guilty for taking a life no matter how small it may seem is a good thing.

What's done is done, the important thing is you didn't intend to do it, if you are feeling guilty, try doing some good things out there on behalf of lost life, it may help.

And I suggest picking up using 2 piece of papers or basically anything flat enough next time

I live with redback spiders who decide to move into MY home, MY territory, they have got heaps of places to live outdoors but NOO they still invade my home. I have no qualms about killing them when I see them as they have no qualms about killing me with their venom. Harmless insects I catch and put outside but anything that has the potential to harm me, no. Use common sense in your beliefs. And humans ARE superior to other species because of our brain development, although at times you wouldn't think so. Humans are the pinnacle of evolution.

    get over it.

You kill something all the time just by being alive.

Think of all the bugs you squash taking a walk or driving.

Think of the fleas you kill when you treat your pets.

Think of the dust mites you squish when you get into bed.

Think of the critters that died when your produce was grown.

It is a circle of life and part of that circle is death.

How many bacteria did you kill today? As in: do you toothbrush?

How many microbes lost their lives because of you?

What about the lives of carrots, peas and many other vegetables, sacrificed for your daily sustenance? How is animal life any better than plant life?
