Why would a cat eat ashes out of a fireplace?

Is he missing something in his diet or does he just want to set himself on fire? My silly 7-year-old Maine Coon does this every opportunity he gets! It doesn't make him sick.

Update:

I am feeding him more than enough; he weighs 20 pounds!

I would get your cat checked for Anemia or another nutrient Deficiency.

Source(s): neighbors cat had anemia, ate weird things like ash and mud...
  • that is really dangerous and you should put up a fire place gate to prevent it.but i think she is doing that because you dont feed her enough
