The mole: why is carbon-12 used instead of hydrogen atom?

When calculating the relative atomic mass or relative molecular mass, the mass of one molecule/atom of the substance is always compared to 1/12 of the mass of one atom of carbon-12 instead of one hydrogen atom. Why is it so?

    The answer is historically the standard for Ar scale was hydrogen. As the lightest element it was given Ar=1. Carbon-12 is used now because it is easier to handle than gaseous hydrogen and is an abundant isotope
