What dictates which spring training baseball games are shown on MLB network?

Ill start by saying that I am a Giants fan. Every time I turn mlb network on to watch some spring training, I noticed that it always seems to be the same teams almost every time. The Phillies, Yankees, Red Sox, and for some reason the New York Mets. Is this an east coast bias? The Mets are not a very competitive team so it also doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me why I constantly see them on tv as well. Any help?

MLB wants to show games at 1pm ET. At that time, only the games in Florida are starting. Since the teams that train in Florida are primarily from the east, that is who they are going to show. If they want to show a later game, then they can look at games in Arizona, which start around 3pm ET.

Also, there are more people living in east coast cities than in places like Kansas City or Seattle. So more people want to see the Yankees and Phillies rather than the Royals or Mariners. This is the case with the other major sports as well. This is why you constantly see the New York Giants or Boston Celtics on ESPN.

Is it a bias? Perhaps. The pundits see those teams a lot more often than the teams in the midwest or west coast, so they will talk about them more. Obviously they will talk about teams like the Lakers and Cowboys, but they are the exception.

The MLB.tv people are not covering the games themselves, they are simply rebroadcasting local coverage. So... the first component is finding what games are even available for broadcast.

If the YES Network decides to air 15 games and the Giants only air 5 games, then the odds are higher that the MLB will have a Yankees game than a Giants game. The decision by the local provider is going to be based on what other content they have, and how much they think will be made by airing an ST game over local college sports, or basketball, or whatever else they have access to.

The Phillies carrier is more likely to play a Phillies ST game because the 76ers stink... but Chicago might be less likely to aire ST games because the Blackhawks are a good team.

Anyhow, I doubt the MLB passes up on west coast teams because they don't like them.

Same thing happens on ESPN.My only guess is bias. The "experts" pick the red sox and the phillies to meet in the WS every year. I definatley notice the same thing. Although someone told me they broadcast east coast teams because of some reason for the time change?

I rather like gazing the youngsters play, the keenness is wonderful. And you just recognize they're dreaming in regards to the majors...It can be rather inspiring. I will watch, thanks for the top's up!
