Can someone become a Catholic priest without having a home church?

Maybe this seems like an uneducated question, but I live in Los Angeles area. Though there are many, many Catholic churches in my area, they all have a priest already. I guess what I'm trying to ask is if I feel a calling to become a Catholic priest, can I still become one even if a Catholic church in my area doesn't have an opening for a priest?

Yes but all you need to do is find some altar boys between the ages of 8 and 12.

Quite what's weird is how a lot you have got misunderstood the Catholic educating about nuns and monks. First, nuns and monks decide upon not to marry. That's their decision - the Catholic Church does not inform any person that they must come to be nuns and monks. But not everyone needs to or will have to get married and so these men and women could choose to servce God as a nun or priest. Second, there isn't any requirement for nuns/clergymen to be virgins. Correctly - there are married guys who're Catholic clergymen! A lady (widow or unmarried) might choose to turn out to be a nun after any kids she had are grown. Third, nuns are not often locked away in a convent. There are some that choose to are living a cloistered lifestyles (once more - it is a alternative they make). Most nuns in convents work in the community mainly serving the bad. You rather will have to study the truth earlier than passing such sweeping judgement.

If you want to be a Roman Catholic priest, you have to go through training (seminary, etc.).

Once you are a priest, you go where they tell you to go. It might be to run a church in your home town, or to serve in one in Ghana, or to work in some rectory office somewhere in Northern Greenland.

When you become a Catholic priest you don't really get much choice where you go.

So it doesn't really matter where you live now or if the churches already have priests.

I am happy that you have heard God's calling for you. Go to a seminary and get yourself trained first or go to your priest and tell him about how you want to be a priest. He would probably be the best one to consult about this. The seminary and the bishops of the diocese will assign you to a Church somewhere. Priests don't choose the church you go to. It's assigned to them. Best of wishes!

no you may not. for it is the Catholic church that decides where to put each Priest and then your future will be in their hands according to your works. I would love to have you in the Priesthood and I know god would be greatly honored to have you as well. But fist like me you must learn obedience to the higher Church authorities he puts in place and obey and respect them always. go to your nearest Priest and ask him if he could mentor you through the process for it is the best job on earth.

Sure, your archdiocese will be able to find a place for you. It may not be in a parish church but in a school somewhere, as a chaplain in a hospital or nursing home, or perhaps even as a missionary of some sort. There will always be room somewhere for each and every priest.

Yes, of course. You go where you are assigned.

It's not like there's a sign in the window "Priest wanted."

You have to go to seminary. Also pass a psych test. You may or may not find an assignment in your home town.

Not sure but I think if you join an order, like the Benedictines or Dominicans you can do your own thing (within the bounds of the Order). Monks are priests.

all priests are allocated a parish, new priests have a mentor for a while until they have had the experience to run their own parish . you go to where your bishop sends you . it is not the priest's call
