Animal sounds and tracks?

My husband and son heard an awful sound outside last night after supper. It sounded like a mountain lion when you listen to the sound on the internet. But we have never had any mountain lion around here before (Winston Salem, NC). Anyway my husband is sure it was not a screech owl and he's pretty sure it wasn't a bobcat either. We went looking for tracks today and only found one type of track. It was in the shape of a V sorda, it does not look like deer tracks (which are common here). The track was about 2.5 inches long. So what sounds like a possible mountain lion with V shaped tracks? Thank you for your time!

It could have been a cougar. They aren't super common in NC, but they aren't unheard of in the area. You say deer are common in your area. Where the prey wander, the predator will eventually follow.

I'm not sure that I can give you any information on animals with 'V-shaped' tracks, but this is what a cougar (mountain lion) print looks like: http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,4570,7-153-10370_121...

Also, if you think you have a cougar in your area, keep your pets inside.
