Question about tipping at a pizza place?

My husband and I are regular customers at a small family-owned pizza and pub. When you visit this particular place, you place your order at the counter and get your own drinks at the fountain, and your own silverware. They give you a number and the staff brings your order to your table when it is ready. We get our own drink refills when we want them. The staff comes back to clear your table when you are finished eating. My question is--do we need to leave a tip for this? We usually leave about 15%, but when we go with friends, they say there is no need for a tip because this is like a fast-food restaurant when we order at the counter and get our own drinks. A lot of the time it is a different person bringing out the food, than the one clearing the table. I've tried to watch to see what other customers do and about half do not leave tips. What would you do?

When was the last time you were at a McDoanld's and had your meal brought to your table, had your drink refilled and the table cleared by an emloyee?

    NEVER!

Tip the servers, they are working for YOU!

Your friends are right: no need to tip at a place where you do all the work yourselves.

The people who work there are paid by their employer. You have no obligation to pay them any extra. They know that and might just think you're a sucker if you actually leave money on the table. "Hey guys! Those rubes at table five left us a $3 tip! What idiots!" In some states they get minimum wage PLUS tips.

Unless you have a "relationship" with the person serving you, why would you care what they're paid? You think they're waiting back there for the chance to spit on your pie next time you come in?

This is one of those situations where it's okay, but not expected.

Do they have a tip jar at the register? If so, then they probably pool tips, and the employees share.

    I never leave tips....

Why should you? They are probably making a ridiculous amount of profit from the food they are selling you why give them more money?
