Is Further Punishment for Sin Exacted After One’s Death?

What do you think?

Update:

Rom. 6:7, NAB: “A man who is dead has been freed from sin.” (Kx: “Guilt makes no more claim on a man who is dead.”)

Are the dead able to experience joy because of confidence in the prospect of salvation?

Eccl. 9:5, JB: “The living know at least that they will die, the dead know nothing.”

Isa. 38:18, JB: “Sheol does not praise you [Yahweh], death does not extol you; those who go down to the pit do not go on trusting in your faithfulness.” (So how can any of them “experience great joy over the certainty of salvation”?)

According to the Bible, by what means is purification from sins accomplished?

1 John 1:7, 9, JB: “If we live our lives in the light, as he [God] is in the light, we are in union with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. . . . If we acknowledge our sins, then God who is faithful and just will forgive our sins and purify us from everything that is wrong [“all our wrong-doing is purged away,” Kx].”

Rev. 1:5, JB: “Jesus Christ . . . love

    Good question.

Consider: Must God *have* to implement a horrible punishment for someone who conducts themselves in an immoral way? Besides, most of the time people punish *themselves* within their lifetimes as a result of their poor choices.

Using an analogy of working on a job, any *successful* employer will tell you that the hope of receiving a gift is a powerful motivator for any good work done. It is a far more effective tactic of guiding people than to threaten them with an unreasonable punishment. If a worker is extremely defiant and continually does not follow the rules stated by their place of employment, they most likely will end up being fired. But this is the worst that will likely happen to them. It is not typical for their former boss to harass them and make them absolutely miserable for the rest of their lives.

So would it really be reasonable for a God of love (1 John 4:8) to condone eternally burning someone alive as an acceptable punishment for human's wrongdoing? Would it really be reasonable for a God who "loves righteousness and justice" (Psalm 33:5) to condemn someone who has lived for only 70 or 80 years to everlasting torment?

Notice that at the very beginning of human history, Jehovah God did not threaten Adam and Eve with eternal fiery torture if they were to disobey Him. No, their punishment was stated as the *withholding* of the gift of eternal life and therefore would die a natural death. (Gen. 2:17)

"Hell" is NOT a fiery place of torment. The Bible clearly shows that the condition of the dead is one of inactivity (Eccl. 9:5; Ps. 146:4) - likened to a deep sleep. (Ps. 13:3; John 11:11-14; Acts 7:60; 1 Cor. 7:39; 15:51; 1 Thess. 4:13)

"Hell" is an unsatisfactory translation of the original Bible words "Sheol" of the Old Testament and "Hades" of the New Testament. The word "hell" in the same verses in other translations of the Bible read "the grave," "the world of the dead," etc.

    Collier’s Encyclopedia (1986, Vol. 12, p. 28) says this concerning “Hell”:

“First it stands for the Hebrew Sheol of the Old Testament and the Greek Hades of the Septuagint and New Testament. Sheol in Old Testament times referred SIMPLY TO THE ABODE OF THE DEAD.”

And the KJV New Testament Greek Lexicon describes, "the realm of the dead; later use of this word: the grave, death."

The penalty of sin is death.

When we die, sin is payed for.

However, just because we die, doesn't mean we will live forever.

Eternal life is this: John 17:3 This means everlasting life, their taking in knowledge of you, the only true God, and of the one whom you sent forth, Jesus Christ.

I would think that a lake of fire that burns eternally might qualify for further punishment after ones death. Of course, that can be avoided by accepting the free gift of salvation in faith from Jesus Christ, your Lord and Savior while you are still alive. t is a case of who will pay for your sins... .

The whole philosophy as from the religions are not so accurate.

Esoteric traditions and teachers as from the Masters of wisdom

one of whom is Jesus and Christ etc state that sin is now virtually obsolete

since Jesus stayed on earth in other incarnations and carried out the sin offering

as part of his earth role this took 1800 years from Palestine days.

We are taught poorly as to the one life and death and then its heaven of hell.

This is not accurate since we are all bound by karma to reincarnate

for many thousands of lives on earth.

As ye sow so shall ye reap which simply means that as

you do unto others that will come back to you also

At death you will go to that level which you have

gained by good or bad deeds so take care etc. Amen

it is cause and effect i.e. karma which is the law of cosmos itself.

Of course. Why we can't have the punishment happen here on Earth where people could verify whether it happens or not. No, we must have the punishment be perfectly indistinguishable from death because otherwise the jig is up.

(KJ) Rom 6:7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.

(NIV) Rom 6:7 because anyone who has died has been set free from sin.

(ESV) Rom 6:7 For one who has died has been set free [fn] from sin.

(ASV) Rom 6:7 for he that hath died is justified from sin.

(YLT) Rom 6:7 for he who hath died hath been set free from the sin.

(DBY) Rom 6:7 For he that has died is justified from sin.

(NWT) (Romans 6:7) For he who has died has been acquitted from [his] sin.

The word/s freed, free, justified and acquitted all come from [δικαιόω]dikaioō; dē-kī-o'-ō From δίκαιος

Outline of Biblical Usage 1) to render righteous or such he ought to be 2) to show, exhibit, evince, one to be righteous, such as he is and wishes himself to be considered 3) to declare, pronounce, one to be just, righteous, or such as he ought to be

So just one scripture disproves any form of punishment when one dies, a burning hell is not even mentioned in the Bible as fire in the Bible means total destruction, in fact, because of the way that the word “hell” is understood today that it is such an unsatisfactory translation of these original Bible words. Webster’s Third New International Dictionary, unabridged, under “Hell” says: “fr[om] . . . helan to conceal.” The word “hell” thus originally conveyed no thought of heat or torment but simply of a ‘covered over or concealed place.’ In the old English dialect the expression “helling potatoes” meant, not to roast them, but simply to place the potatoes in the ground or in a cellar.

The Bible does mention a lake if fire and calls this lake the second death from which there is no resurrection and shows that Satan, two symbolic beast, death, and hell(grave) are cast into the lake of fire(Rev 20:10,14).

The word tormented is also mentioned, in Bible times to be tormented was to be confined in bonds, to be locked up, this would mean those that are cast into the lake of fire would be confined in death forever, that is why two symbolic beast, death a thing that happens and the place called hell mans grave are cast into the lake of fire with Satan, they will be no more they all die a second death.

Those that die now will be resurrected because their death releast them from their sins, Act 24:15 (American Standard) says ; having hope toward God, which these also themselves look for, that there shall be a resurrection both of the just and unjust.

We see that Jesus' followers also believed in the resurrection of the last days (John 11:24) Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.

The false clergy has twisted the scriptures to control with fear, this false teaching has made the church millions as those that give trying to buy their way out of hell and as my brother in law found out for $50.00 he could get his daughter(died before she could be baptized) prayed out of purgatory, money can get you to heaven according to the false clergy!

Ezekiel 18:4 says the soul that sins dies, false clergy would have you believe that the soul lives on and it's only through them that it can be saved from a burning hell and if you pay them enough money they can even pray the worst out of hell(2 Tim 4:3-4)

The judgment period is a 1000 years long and has nothing to do with your sins you committed before you died!

The punishment for rejecting God is to be apart from God. We get what we hope to get.
