Quick question about pull offs?

Been watching closely to some guitar players recently and have been noticing that on most, if not all pull offs, they push/release up instead of down on their pull offs. have i been learning pull offs incorrectly or do they know something i don't?

    if these are pro players please post links to video

    else this sounds like you are watching friends who don't know correct technique
