Is Thilan Samaraweera the most underrated modern day test batsman...?

He's retired recently. It seems no one even noticed it (except for SLns). He had a great test career maintaining avg of 49 for 81 tests. He's a good all round test cricketer. His recent performance in SA was a example for it. But highly underrated. When someone is talking about SL batting, its all about Sangakkara and Jayawardena. But I rate Samaraweera on par with those two in tests. Think it was too early for him to retire.

How do you compare him with VVS Laxman and Younis Khan....?

Update:

@ small: it's not fair to say samaraweera don't have the skills and temperament much as Laxman, Although Laxman is a eye catching player Samaraweera has performed as well as Laxman. Samaraweera has a better avg. than Laxman. But agree that Laxman was a wonderful player to watch but Samaraweera was as effective as him.

No I don't think he is underrated. He is a good batsman yes but certainly not great.

Here I write down a statistic comparison between Laxman and Samaraweera.

    Laxman- Matches- 134 Runs-8781 Avg- 45.97 100's-17

    Thilan- Matches- 81 Runs-5462 Avg- 48.76 100's-14

☭Though Laxman's average is below Thilan's we can't forget that he has played more matches. Thilan once averaged well over 50 only to drop it to 48.

☭And out of 14 centuries of Thilan 11 came at sub continent. 1 at WI. 2 at SA. No centuries in England, Australia or Nz! As for Laxman just 9 at S/C while scoring 1 in Nz, 2 in WI and 4 in Australia which is much better away record than Thilan.

    See their averages

    Home< Thilan 53.84 Laxman 51.60

    Away> Thilan 43.31 Laxman 42.49

    ☭Not much difference there.

    In Australia

    Laxman 44.14

    Thilan 17.91

    In SA

    Laxman 40.42

    Thilan 67.80

    In Eng

    Laxman 34.47

    Thilan 27.37

    In Nz

    Laxman 40.25

    Thilan 59.33

Thilan had some real poor averages in Australia and England while having a great averages in SA and NZ. Meanwhile Laxman averages 40+ in Nz, Aus and SA.

    In S/C

    VVS 49.74

    Thilan 54.11

    Outside S/C

    VVS 42.32

    Thilan 35.97

Thilan has played lot of matches in S/C and he has been a flop outside the S/C apart from averaging high in SA and Nz while Laxman was also not good outside S/C as in S/C but he has been marginally better than Samare outside S/C.

So all in all these stats prove that Laxman is marginally/slightly ahead of Thilan as a batsman. Still there is not much of a difference between the two. So in a way yes both are sort of in the same league.

I disagree with Small calling Laxman was far ahead of Thilan. He isn't. The above stats prove that there is just a slight difference between the two.

☬I think Younis Khan is better than both Samare and Laxman. Once again not by a huge margin. Slightly I must say.

I rate him in the same catagory as Laxman or above

Laxman has a modest average of 40 and a failure in England , Sri Lanka ,SA and almost eveery where except few good inns against Australia...Samare has more double centuries(all away from home agaist pakistan) , centuries and a far better average so saying he is NO WHERE near Laxman is rediculous

However Younis Khan is much better player than both Samareweera and LAxman whether its tests or ODIs.

Samare always played under the shadow of Maiya and Sanga but saved SL in numerous times..but in SA series he changed that to an extent..EVery other team that toured SA recently got bowled out for under 50 but SL survived thanks to him

Despite this he wasn't a match winner for Sri-Lanka both in longer and shorter format of the game. I think comparing him with players like VVS Laxman and Younis Khan is not fair because these two players were the back bone of their respective team. Laxman always performed well against the top team like Australia whilst Younis has many memorable innings like 269 runs in a single innings agaisnt India. Samaraweera was a good player but not like VVS Laxman and Younis Khan.

Samaraveera's case is indeed a parallel of what happened to Laxman in India, even though they are hardly comparable to each other in terms of skill-sets.

In my opinion, the SLC is not being fair to him by depriving him the golden opportunity of making the most against weaker opposition teams in familiar home conditions. Samaraveera has every reason to get pissed off and announce his retirement in a huff.
