Why do Christians read the Bible and not understand what they read?

When Jesus appears to his Disciples after his (supposed) crucifixion, he went out of his way to prove that he did not die on the cross. He even asked them for something to eat. To prove what? That he is not immortal or a spirit that does not need to eat.

36 As they were talking about these things, Jesus himself stood among them, and said to them, “Peace to you!” 37 But they were startled and frightened and thought they saw a spirit. 38 And he said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39 See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me, and see. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” 40 And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. 41 And while they still disbelieved for joy and were marveling, he said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?” 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish,[a] 43 and he took it and ate before them.

    that is a good question. because there are actually people who read the Bible or just follow along with how their pastor uses it but does not personally understand it themselves. thankfully i'm not like them. i do my own studying and understand the Bible.

    in the scripture you are referring to Jesus is not trying to prove that He did not die but that He died and rose again. Because that was part of His goal from when He was born. that He would die and rise again after three days. And He went to show them because because of how sad they were and how much they were losing faith. He had to strengthen them in their faith so they can move on in life and continue to spread God's Word.

    New King James Version (NKJV)

    5 Every word of God is pure;

    He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him.

    6 Do not add to His words,

    Lest He rebuke you, and you be found a liar.
