My Toshiba laptop used to gracefully go to sleep when the battery power drained to a certain level?

now it shuts itself off completely and when I start it up it fails to boot. On second attempt it will start normally. I did not (consciously or intentionally) change any settings. Anybody got any ideas on what is happening?

Go here in your laptop and manually check the setting. Start\Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Power Options\Power Saver Or Balanced\Change Plan Settings. If you can turn sleep mode completely off. Completely. And if you havent done this already, turn off hibernate.

    Let me show you how.

Open up Command Prompt. To do this, on your keyboard type Windows Button + R. That will open up the run line. After you do that, type in 'cmd' in the runline. Once you have done that Command Prompt should open up.

In Command prompt type "powercfg -h off ". That should turn off hibernate.

After that do a virus scan in order to make sure a virus is not causing this. Here is a good antimalware program.

all you have to do is install it and run a scan. Don't worry about anything else as far as features go.
