ATM ptotocol layer 2?? what is it please help?

What is the protocol ATM used for?? how does it work and why is it used.please can someone explain it in laymans terms

deboarden no I clearly do need to know what it is I'm studying Networking,and I'm not a simpleton I haven't found anything useful yet on google that's why I'm asking here,why do you even bother posting answers in the networking section if you don't know anything about it??

    ATM is a layer 2 protocol that moves small fixed width packets called cells. Its commonly used on WAN connections. It moves little packet and because the packets are fixed width, the size never needs to be calculated and the processing overhead drops. That's about the extent of my knowledge, as I don't use it.

    While dorboaden was being a jerk about it, the first result on Google should've been the wikipedia page (you have to search for Asynchronous Transfer Mode) which has quite a bit of info about it.
