My computer won't start up properly?

Symptom: when I try to start up my Windows computer after shutting it down, it loads right up until before the Windows insignia should pop up on my computer. Right before that, the screen stays black and only the mouse appears. I can move it but I can't do anything with it. My computer starts just fine on safe mode, but not one normal mode (I have already tried loading to the last successful boot and using system restore. Neither worked, and I lost the cd to use start up repair.

Background: my computer was working fairly normally before. I have Kaspersky's anti-virus and I scan about once every three days. I have Windows Firewall with as far as I know no holes to allow other programs, and I rarely stray into non-Kaspersky approved sites. About a week ago I was trying to download the X-Ray mod for minecraft (note: I didn't have modloader). When trying to install it took me to a site called iLivid. I installed the site, and that when things started going south. It started small, with only about a 10% failure rate to start. But it got worse. I decided that iLivid was the problem and uninstalled it, but even after that I was only able to get on about one more time before I couldn't get on again. I checked Kaspersky in safe mode. I said I have one alert, an outdated model of Adobe. However, based on the description of the alert it doesn't seem like it is the problem, and if it is I can't uninstall it until I get on normal mode.

Can anyone help me? Is there a free solution, or do I have to take it in to get fixed?

Ilivid is the problem I downloaded ilivid and it screwed up my computer the same thing. happen, but I just got a new compute then. It is possible it put some type of virus on there. If you have a some typy of anti virus program like zone alarm try running that if it detects nothing then it's probably a virus then depends on what type of anti virus program you have

    Thanks for all the info.

I don't think you have a virus because viruses don't take effect until you are in explorer.

Your computer is shutting down in the "Booting device" screen I assume from what you said. That is when the computer tries to access the data in your hard drive. It will most likely be your hard drive because that is your main booting device.

You need to take it to the repair shop so they can replace it. A hard drive can be from $60-$300 depending what kind of hard drive you are looking or how many files (music, movies, pictures) you plan on saving in your computer. I don't know how much they will charge you for replacing the hardrive.

Note all the data in your hard drive might be lost, there are recovery plans in compusa and circuit city, but they are kind of expensive.

    Good luck.

hi, (ANS) the respond is which you have an incorrect boot up series defined interior the equipment BIOS. to repair that's particularly basic & relatively ordinary, all you're able to do, is reboot your laptop and key F1 or it would F2 at initiate so as to open (enter) the setup exhibit for the equipment BIOS. **next interior your machines equipment BIOS seek for the object stated as "Boot series" , open up the boot series innovations. Now set the boot series innovations to No.a million A: floppy, No.2 CD or DVD next and finally no.3 troublesome disk force C: (that's definitely the impressive order wherein the equipment could artwork). **The BIOS will first look to work out in case you have a floppy disk in force A: and whilst it shows no longer something, it next tests the CD or DVD force and if it shows no longer something it finally could detect your machines troublesome disk force & then load the OS i.e. domicile windows XP. **Its purely pausing by using fact it sounds like the boot series is incorrect. **the impressive BIOS order is as above no.a million,no.2,no.3 (this helps you besides the gadget from a floppy or bootable CD disk in case you have extreme equipment issues. Or could run an XP restoration console etc. or possibly run a restoration from the domicile windows XP disk that got here with your gadget. desire that helps? style Regards from Ivan laptop veteran,MCSE knowledgeable.

According to your description, guess you got KSoD (Black Screen of Death)!

    1) Restart your PC

    2) Log on and wait for the black screen to appear

    3) Make sure your PC should be able to connect to the Internet (black screen does not appear to affect this)

    4) Press the CTRL, ALT and DEL keys simultaneously

    5) When prompted, Click Start Task Manager

    6) In Task Manager Click on the Application Tab

    7) Next Click New Task

    8) Now enter the command:

    http://info.prevx.com/download.asp?GRAB=BLACKSCREE...

    9) Click OK and your (Web) browser should start up and begin the download process

    10) When prompted for the download Click run, the black screen fix program will download and run to automatically fix the issue.

    11) Now restart your PC and the black screen problem will hopefully be gone.

if not working so, you got a power management problem!

    enter the BIOS

Navigate through the BIOS and look for something like "power management" then hit enter!

    the setting should be like:

    ACPI function ENABLED

    ACPI standby state S1

JFP2 power led function STANDBY LED

    POWER button function POWER OFF

Restore on AC power loss OFF

then hit enter on " wake up event setup"

    should see something like this:

    "wake up event by BIOS"
