What would be the most effective way to...?

Turn the hole from a missing drawer into a shelf for baskets to slide into?

Rip off the middle guide (it's an old dresser) and somehow fir some plywood in...?

Or if I find the missing drawer just cut the front off?

If you just want a shelf and don't care so much how it looks - then go ahead and remove the drawer guide and install a shelf. But if looks is important then you will need to consider very carefully what you want to accomplish and figure out just how you are going to go about it.

I'm no "Professional" wood worker but I've built two custom bathroom vanities and built some cabinets for my mother-in-law. The look you want dictates how much effort you need to put into it.

Simply removing the face of a drawer will work but you have raw edges exposed. But if you're OK with that then it's all up to you. Be creative as you like.

    Hope this helps.

If you take out the guide you could use a piece of luan. It's thin and smooth. Just depends on what you want for looks and how much weight you want it to hold.
