Why do men make catcalls?

Seriously neither my husband or I can figure it out. Do they want a reaction? Do they think they will get lucky from a catcall? I got one today, I wasn't wearing anything revealing or tight. So what is the deal?

Poor breeding. Unfortunately, it seems to be getting more common. There are still people out there who train their sons to respect women and their daughters to expect it. It's getting more difficult all the time, though. You can't leave it up to the schools and media; they're no help at all.

    "Hey baby!"...whistling...catcalls.

They learn it somewhere in their youth from older male relatives and friends that yelling and whistling at women gets their attention and possibly makes them come over so that they can be 'sweet talked' into sex? It's that 'male domination' thing. And it's almost like a sport for some of them, as weird as that sounds. What they don't learn is that every woman reacts differently, that most don't like it, and that it's disrespectful and hurts feelings.
