Test / Name Normal Range Interpretation :

"TSH" Test -- Thyroid Stimulating Hormone / Serum thyrotropin 0.4 to 6

0.3 to 3.0 (as of 2003) Under .4 can indicate possible hyperthyroidism. Over 6 is considered indicative of hypothyroidism. Note: the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists has revised these guidelines as of early 2003, narrowing the range to .3 to 3.0. Many labs and practitioners are not, however, aware of these revised guidelines.

Total T4 / Serum thyroxine 4.5 to 12.5 Less than 4.5 can be indicative of under-functioning thyroid when TSH is also elevated. Over 12.5 can indicate hyperthyroidism. Low T4 with low TSH can sometimes indicate a pituitary problem.

Free T4 / Free Thyroxine - FT4 0.7 to 2.0 Less than 0.7 is considered indicative of possible hypothyroidism.

T3 / Serum triiodothyronine 80 to 220 Less than 80 can indicate hypothyroidism

Everything is normal except your TSH, which is high. And yes, this can indicate thyroid disease.

The TSH is a newer test, and is very sensitive, more so than the others. And, not all laboratories follow the .3 - 3.0 normal range. Your lab might be saying you don't have it, when you actually do.

These are a great article, read them all. One of the points it makes is that TSH levels fluctuateuate during the day and night

So, consult your doctor. Make him/her aware about the new normal range of TSH, and see if the doctor wants to give you medication. A high TSH is an indicator of hypothyroidism, which is treatable with thyroid medication.

And yes, those symptoms can all mean something else.

Hypothyroid Symptoms and signs may include:

    Coarse and thinning hair.

    Dry skin.

    Brittle nails.

A yellowish tint to the skin.

    Slow body movements.

    Cold skin.

    Inability to tolerate cold.

    Feeling tired, sluggish, or weak.

Memory problems, depression, or problems concentrating.

    Constipation.

Heavy or irregular menstrual periods that may last longer than 5 to 7 days.

Other, less common symptoms may include:

    An enlarged thyroid gland (goiter).

Modest weight gain, often 10 lb (4.5 kg) or less.

Swelling of the arms, hands, legs, and feet, and facial puffiness, particularly around the eyes.

    Hoarseness.

    Muscle aches and cramps

    Hope this helps.

Double check the results from the bloodwork for your thyroid. Guidelines for normal TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) levels have changed a while back causing the upper threshold in the range to be lowered (went from 5 to 3). However many doctors and labs still follow the old guidelines, so there are a lot of people out there who are not receiving treatment due to their doctors telling them they are within "normal" range when in fact they have a real problem that warrants treatment. If your TSH is anywhere between 3-5, you may be hypothyroid but your doctor is telling you nothing is wrong and that you're normal (TSH isn't even the appropriate test of thyroid function, but that's what a majority of doctors use). I think the optimal TSH level for fertility and pregnancy is 2. Not saying it's your thyroid, maybe you already looked into this, but I thought this might be worth mentioning since there are a lot of people, including me, are being jerked around and led on a wild goose chase to find a resolution to what ails them when the solution has been staring at them in the face the whole time. I'm not even TTC atm, I'm just trying to feel better. Hope you find a solution and get pregnant! Good luck.
