Commas separate a list of items (i.e. pie, cake, and trees), and sometimes to pause in a sentence (you just saw one :)) A semicolon is to connect two clauses without a conjunction (i.e I like pi; not pie, however.) Periods are to end sentences (Whee, that was fun.)
