I'm looking for the name of a movie?

I am 64. When I was about 10 or 11, (1958 or 1959 approximately) I saw a horror movie I still remember. A dapper,short, bearded man (not common then except with the Beats) in a 3-piece suit was the villain. He gave his victims a piece of paper with mystic symbols on it. The victim then suffered two visitations from a monstrous demon; in the first the victim just sighted the demon, but in the second, was killed by it. The villain was finally vanquished by being given back his piece of paper with the curse. Many years later I realised that this story must have been based on - or stolen from - M. R. James famous short story "The Casting of the Runes," but I wouldn't have known that then. Does anybody remember seeing this movie? Can anybody help me with the title? Thanks.
