Painting a wooden object with acrylic paint, what do I need to do?

I have this wooden paperweight that's been made and painted by someone else. I'm not happy with the way they've painted it. There's blobs of paint here and there and the brush marks are haphazard and rushed. I want it to look a lot tidier and as close to flawless as possible.

Where do I start with repainting it? I have zero crafting experience, but should I sand it and just apply a couple of coats of acrylic? Tell me everything I need, brushes etc and how long to let it dry.

Tips, whatever you can think of. Thanks.

First thing to do is lightly sand down the paint that is already on there to a smooth finish, then I would use a spray primer found at any craft store. I would also recommend using a " spray paint " so you get a nice smooth finish on the paper weight.Starting with very light coats and letting it dry before using the next coat, 3 or 4 will do.Let dry well between coats Good luck with your painting.

The first thing I would have done is to paint a few layers of primer over the wood, as this stops the paint from becoming a mess when painted directly onto the wooden grains.

Primer can be bought from any DIY store, such as B&Q, and I would paint two layers over the current layer of acrylic paint. Paint one layer, and then leave it to dry for anywhere between 10-20 minutes, depending on the quality of the primer, and then continue with the second layer, and repeat the waiting process. Depending on what size the object is, I'd use a medium sized brush, not as big as one you'd paint the walls with, but not as small as if you were doing intricate details.

From here, you can re-do the acrylic paints in whatever design you wish to do, but take it slow, so that you don't end up making a mess or risk a rushed appearance.

Make sure that they didn't use oil paint. Because if you put acrylic paint over oil it will crack.

Hmm...for the blobs of paint maybe try sanding it down? Other than that it should be easy to paint over.

Well a standard flat brush should do the trick. If you are going to paint designs and such on it you will need rounds and detail brushes.

I have done tons of murals with latex paint - some very detailed. I have worked on wood panels and a little with it on canvas. It is like using anything new, there is a learning curve. Also, as far as how watery, it depends on the brand/quality.
