Are we the author of our own story...?

or does the story happen spontaneously in spite of our interference?

Consider that subtle prompts are given that impel us to actions that we have not consciously chosen, such as spontaneously reaching for something or standing up to stretch without having a prior thought about these movements. Or perhaps instantly being moved to call a friend or pay a bill or go for a walk...each independent of any context that makes sense to the conscious mind.

Life goes on in this way without our active and deliberate choices, so what is it that is responsible for this spontaneous and intuitive "living" for which we often take credit (i.e., "I am the author of my own fate.")?

For instance, i have just spontaneously paused in my writing and leaned forward with one hand on my hip and the other folded into a fist supporting my cheek, elbow resting on the keyboard support...but i did not "think" to do so. It just happened. So my question is, what caused this action? Then apply my question to the entirety of the life that we seem to "choose" to live. Are we the captains of our fate? The co-captains? Or is there something greater that moves through us, willing us to Its way?

Update:

Michael, i welcome and encourage discourse, This, too, is part of the dance of being. i see us as the instruments through which life fulfills itself, less helpless participants than enspirited and blessed beings, some would say co-creators. While you refer to a middle way, i see only "the way," what is as it is. i seldom respond to answers, but yours is thoughtful and respectful and well considered. Thank you.

Ah Sirius - you ask such interesting questions. Now you've got me being aware of my micro movements and thinking about why they happen!

Everything we do is the result of a previous thought. This creates energy that attracts things and instances and opportunities to achieve what our thought generated. But it's not as simple as that.

Our higher self or celestial soul is responding under the law of attraction to provide what we desire. How it does that is sometimes not understood or seen by us to have any relevance to what we thought about (desired), as some of these things that happen are put in place to manifest in a longer term than we previously thought to desire. If we change our minds continuously, things are not completed and jump from one direction to another, which makes it even more complicated in what is "happening" to us.

The micro movements are interesting. I believe these are also the result of the whole desire plan that we have put in place by our thoughts. If I scratch my nose, or move my arm, or wriggle in my chair, this is my body feeling uncomfortable or having small "pain" and adjusting to suit. But the body only needs to do that if there are unresolved issues that make the body sensitive to those things.

If we are hypnotised, all those unresolved issues that reside in our subconscious are no longer accessible to us, and our body does not react anymore to them. If you are hypnotised (as you have seen) you can place your arm (or body) in ice water for virtually any length of time with nil effects.

So yes, we are in "control" and cause these micromevements, but maybe not in the way we think we do.

I'll be more abstract than I usually am, Sirius. I think we are all parts of an unimaginably complex web of being extending both forward and backward in time. The extent, then, to which write our story is going to depend on how aware we are of what's really going on. We can participate in, but never control, our "destinies". Where you and I might not see completely eye to eye is in defining participation. For me it is acting as a free agent participating in the dance. You seem to move toward dissolving yourself into the process.

I strongly suspect that from the outside the results will look much the same even though we really aren't doing the same thing. Which of us is right? The truth is probably somewhere in the middle, but I cannot even begin to imagine what it would look like. I understand what you are doing, understand it sympathetically, but I just can't follow you there. That's OK, though. Dissonance can also be beautiful.

I want to answer this question so much. I just can't seem to muster up the wording for it.

Like for example our physical body is picking up all sorts of information, without our ego acknowledging it. So the body moves in ways it feels to be appropriate, the egoic self just goes about it's thinking business, interpreting what it will, without questioning the various body motions.

And there is constant telepathic communication going on between you (as in the you, you identify with as an individual), and those around you. Those around you may be plants, animals, people, shifts in weather patterns or anything imaginable. But not one speck of energy gets past your whole self's notice. The ego can only expand to take in so much at once..... the rest of the knowings, are built into the human organism's other abilities of consciousness.

Then we have the "you" the one who is currently manifested in this timeline, constantly communicating with "your" own past and future probable selves. Each of those probable selves is telepathically chatting with everything within his/her paradigm and sending "you" feedback. (as is the "present you" to those personalities).

Technically, consciousness is "a dimension of action". Within that concept...there is always change....

---and I'm going to stop typing now.

This isn't such a great answer, but your question is one of the most thought provoking, challenging questions I've read in a long while here.

We are the author of our own story. The individual will, is connected to the collective will, is connected to the expanded version of the collection of us through all of time (and outside of time)...so yes we are the authors!

(thank you from my very heart for asking, and thank you for giving me an opportunity to attempt an answer).

We have a conscious mind and an unconscious mind part of the whole, each performing different functions. The conscious mind is always taking information in and assessing it. The unconscious mind is responding to things automatically without our awareness, operating from memory and instinct to keep us out of harms way. Just in the way we don't have to think to breath. Then of course there is the emotional side of things- when we are reacting emotionally and irrationally.

We can only try to be the author, we'll never be in control or in charge of all things.

    One may claim so,

but at the same time one can not deny the fact that

the universe around has so much influenced the story

that considering the self as the author appears like an illusion.

" Or is there something greater that moves through us, willing us to Its way?"

"As fire passes through an iron stove, so do the stars pass through man with all their properties and go into him as the rain into the earth, which gives fruit out of that same rain. Now observe that the stars surround the whole earth, as a shell does the egg; through the shell comes the air, and penetrates to the centre of the world." Paracelsus

"Thus shall you think of all this fleeting world, a star at dawn, a ripple in a stream, a child's laugh, a phantasm, a dream." (Shakyamuni.)

If this world is a dream, then we are the dreamed, not the dreamers. If we seem to have free will, it is an illusory freedom. If we seem to have choice, that choice is layed out for us.

In this one thing, I believe, we have some measure of free will - we can look up or we can look down.

That is an interesting point, hmmm makes me wonder if free will is only an illusion. You are somewhat in charge because you can plan some of the big moments, but you are not really in charge of the micro moments, are you? HMMM interesting point
