Why does everyone tell you to go to the ER if you are having a miscarriage?

This is not happening to me right now. But I was just wondering why people always tell you to go to the ER if you are in early pregnancy and you are having bleeding. There's absolutely nothing the hospital or anyone can do to stop an early miscarriage. Why do they tell you to go to the ER when you can just go to your doctors office for monitoring and D&C if you need it?

I have wondered this myself. As a paramedic in an area that has some Amish I always wonder why they call an ambulance for a miscarriage but will more dangerously deliver their babies at home. Unless you are hemorrhaging you do NOT need an ER.

Just going to the doctor's office can take a lot of time. Usually you have to make an appointment and wait at least a week. Also, your regular doctor may not have the equipment to monitor you well enough during a miscarriage. You don't want cysts to form from items not expelled. Some woman go for severe pain, bleeding too much or because they have an existing medical condition.

When I had mine they sent me to the ER because I didn't really bleed out. I gave birth to what was in there (there are different types of miscarriages). They kept me over night because they wanted to make sure everything cleaned out before giving me a possible D&C. Their fear was that I would develop cysts in the uterus that would impede a future pregnancy.

They also kept me because they wanted to keep what I expelled and have it sent to the lab for analysis.

In most cases, it is important mentally for the person going through the miscarriage to go to the hospital, especially if they can't get to see their regular Doctor. Until you go through one, it is really difficult to explain how hard they can be on you.

Good question, maybe they think in some way the miscarriage can be stopped or treated. I guess the sight of a lot of blood coming out of you is pretty scary. They also want confirmation that it's a miscarriage and at the ER they can do an ultrasound to either confirm a healthy baby or a miscarriage.

But I've always wondered unless it's late at night. why not go to your regular obgyn doctort first? Having gone through a miscarriage it is pretty scary if you don't know what's going on. Thankfully I started spotting first and was seen by my doctor who confirmed the absence of a heartbeat. I couldn't imagine going to the ER and waiting hours to be seen by a doctor I didn't know.

The doctor can ensure that it is not an ectopic pregnancy and that the woman is not hemorrhaging. Also he can rule out other bleeding issues. I bled my first pregnancy and it was a cyst and because I knew about it I could adjust my activities accordingly so that it wouldn't rupture and kill the baby. The second was a miscarriage, and I needed to know that too. The Doctor can also give you a D and C to speed up the process. So in other words people tell you to go to the ER for the babies sake not for your own.
