Recently bought my first Guinea Pigs!! Need advise!?

Yesterday, I bought two Guinea Pigs both male and super cute! I have been reading a lot about them before I bought them and a lot of yesterday... but I want some more input from other guinea pig owners.. on what your guinea pigs like. Right now, they are getting use to the new surrounding, and act a bit shy. once I hold them or give them a treat, they are fine. I have yet to try carrots but I read they like them a lot. I have two in one large crate, they share the water bottle and it was full yesterday around noon and now it maybe has about 2 oz left. is this right?? should I get a new water bottle so they each have their own? Also, when they are "talking" making all kinds of noises to each other is that their way of communication? And what if they make those same noises when Im holding them? is that ok? Sorry for this being so long, just please help me out and let me know a little bit more on a personal experience what yours like. I know I can go to websites, I just want to hear from other guinea owners. Thanks so much!

Update:

KitKat, I actually asked 4 questions,"Is drinking a full water bottle a day normal", "should they each have their own water bottle?" " When they are making all kinds of noises to each other, is that their way of communication?" "When I'm holding them and they make the same noises, is that ok?" ... and then I just wanted to get any advice from Owners... just what it said in the title. Sorry you couldn't understand, but I hope this helps!!!

Hi! Congratulations on getting your babies!

Don't worry, they are going to be shy until they get used to you (even then, some will naturally always be more skittish while other are more outgoing). A great way to bond with them while still helping them feel safe is the towel trick: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRHsmjemGjM

Guinea pigs should be fed fresh lettuce (NOT iceberg) and veggies (occasionally fruit) every day. Here is a great chart with all sorts of vegetables and fruit that are safe for guinea pigs and how often a week they can be fed them: http://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/diet-nutrition...

A great brand of pellet food is Oxbow. Most other brands aren't very nutritious or have unsafe things for the pigs to eat. A rule of thumb, the more delicious the bagged food looks to you, the less good it is. So that rules out any "fiesta" mixes. I pretty much trust all Oxbow products. Another thing you'll want are the Oxbow vitamin C tablets. Guinea pigs can't produce their own vitamin C and so need to be supplemented with it. While they should get a fair bit from fruit and veggies, it's a safe bet to just feed them the tablets too. Plus, they love them! You're also going to want to give them a constant supply of Timothy Hay (not Alfalfa). I recommend either Oxbow brand or Small Pet Select. Having hay is very important for their digestion and health.

As for the water question, you should definitely have at least one bottle per pig. Some pigs drink more than others, and you wouldn't want to risk one pig hogging all the water and the other getting dehydrated, or just not noticing the bottle is empty and them going without water.

And the noises they make are perfectly normal! They'll definitely "talk" to each other, and my boys rarely shut up while they're being handled. Here's a great resource on noises and what they mean: http://www.guineapigmanual.com/guinea-pig-sounds/

If you have more questions guineapigcages.com has a great forum with wonderful, helpful guinea pig owners who would be more than happy to help you out. You're likely to get more accurate information from there than yahoo answers, as many guinea pig owners are well-meaning but uninformed in proper guinea pig care.

It sounds like you really care about your boys! I wish you all the best.

Just make sure your cage is large enough. A pair of piggies need at least 7.5 square feet. Too small a cage will cause them to fight over territory later, plus they will have no way of getting exercise.

The cage should contain at least a couple hiding boxes for privacy. You can offer two water bottles, but it's not that important. Sounds like your bottle may be dripping. Try placing a dish underneath to see how much leaks out. If this is the case, buy one that does not leak.

Guinea pigs cage be very vocal. Do some research on guinea pig sounds to get a better idea of what they are communicating.

I am a Guinea Pig owner. The ball of furs name is Jaxon. Just to be safe only give them Timmothy hay, any other kind of hay could give them kidney stones or bladder infection. Give them a good brand of bedding in the cage because if you give them bedding that has too many lose fibers it could get in their lungs. Give them hay and water and clean the cage atleast every week by taking the bedding out, cleaning the bottom of the cage, putting new bedding in and giving them new food and water. They can eat brocoli just dont give them too much. They can eat blueberries (just not to many because of the sugar level, it could give them sores in their mouths) they can also eat- carrots, peppers raisins (just not too many, same reason as blueberries), tomatos, lettus but I dont know about parsnips. If you have a cat or a dog thats is always in the house lock them in a room for a couple minutes and let the guinea pigs run around for a bit. If they use the bathroom in any way on the floor thats really easy to clean up

Source(s): (continuation) and it doesnt smell. They are great swimmers but I dont suggest you put them in deep bodies of water such as: the tub (depending on how big it is), lakes, ponds and the pool I suggest something very small to put them in if you want them to swim. They also nibble on almost everything they see so keep wires away from them and things like that. Also you dont have to worry about them fighting because Guinea Pigs work with packs or partners always. Hope I helped!
