Is it a good idea to take general chemistry?

I have never taken a chemistry course, and I'm wondering whether it's a good idea to take general chemistry from the start, as opposed to a lower level that wouldn't count towards my major. There are no chemistry prerequisites for general chemistry, but my computer science class for majors (similarly there was also a class for non majors) had no prereqs and was extremely difficult for one without prior experience. What do you think?

(1).. thousands of students do it SUCCESSFULLY every year.

(2).. how long do you want to stay in college? most people want out as fast as possible

(3).. this goes for ALL your classes... stay at least 1 chapter ahead of the class. read ahead and work out the problems ahead of the class. attend lectures. make appointments with the TA's and keep them.

If you like pain, a great idea. I don't know how it currently is taught, but often it has little relationship to the real world of chemistry. A lot of algebraic manipulations, and a huge mass of theory is taught. And you have to keep up with the subject material. A lot will depend if the course is being taught as general chemistry to chemistry majors, or to the general student population. If the latter, it may not be that bad.
