Will my car pass smog in CA if...? And repair advice?

So my cars check engine light is on and I need it to pass smog in about 3 weeks. I don't know ill have the money for repairs by then.

I have a code reader that can delete the codes, if I delete the codes from my car will it pass smog?? My car is a 98 Volvo. I ran the code reader and the codes are p0442 and p0108. I also live in CA, I don't know if that will matter or not.

Also!! I had another code which was for a faulty MAF sensor, o2sensor, leak, etc. I forget the code, but I cleaned the MAF sensor and that code went away. Then a few other codes came on, like a code for the coolant, and the 108 code. The 442 code has been on the whole time. I took it to the mechanic to get my car diagnosed and they said that the 108 code was on and they said I probably will need to replace the MAF sensor.

I erased those codes and then the 108 code came back. And today I ran the code reader and the 442 code was back along with the 108.

Thanks for reading!!

California will more than likely automatically fail your vehicle if it has a check engine light on. a 442 should be an emissions code (EVAP system small leak) which would be grounds for a fail. Check all vacuum lines. Common areas of failure are lines leading to and from your emission canister. Some manufactures leave a vacuum diagram under the hood somewhere. as for the 108, check you wiring going to your MAF or MAP sensor (if its a MAP sensor, check for vacuum leaks around it, if its a MAF sensor, check the housing around it and all your intakes after the sensor for leaks) Any coolant problems are usually fixable by adding coolant if needed, replacing coolant temp sensor if needed, replacing thermostat if needed, or fixing a leak if one is found.

If the check engine light is on, they won't even waste time with a smog check. That's an automatic failure. Deleting the codes does not fix the problem. If you do an actual repair that "takes" and shut off the light and it doesn't come pack on, you can assume the problem is gone. Some sensors are dependent on those upstream of them. The malfunction might cascade, but only one sensor is bad. You either have the means to get your Volvo fixed or you don't. Nobody has the power to argue your car into fixing itself. You might get a time extension from the DMV if you cannot get your car fixed in time. If you still wnat to try cheap so-called remedies, run a can of "Pass or don't pay" in you gas and pray for a miracle. Quit using that cheap Costco gas for a while.

P0442 is a leak in the evap system. So maybe a hose dosconnected around the charcoal canister?

P0108 is a faulty MAF sensor. That could be caused by a faulty or disconnected hose. So they may be related. Fix one thing they may both go away.

So check them hoses. Replace any that look questionable.

If you are near the pasadena area I would be glad to help if you need assistance, email me.

There is a way to test the evap system using smoke. Look for a youtube video on it.

what your friend can do, since its been several months, is pay to fix whatever needs fixing so the car smogs. take the papers to the mechanic fix the problem get it trough smog. Register it in his name. Then go down and fill out a small claims application. They can sue the guy for the entire amount of the smog, be sure ant tell the judge he tried to smog it just before he sold it. The small claims court judge will do one of two things, give your friend all of the money back, or 50 percent plus the court costs, including filing fee and service of the summons. Tell your friend to use the sheriff and send it to the guys work if possible. (makes him look like a dork) you are right its illegal , but once your friend took possesion of the car it became your friends problem. And the only way to sort this out is to take the owner to small claims court. Typically, the judge awards half, but sue for the whole amount, the guy may pay, before court, because he does not want to see the judge. good luck

CALIFORNIA HAS THE STRICTEST EMISSION LAWS IN THE U.S. THEY WILL FAIL YOUR CAR IF IT DOESN'T MEET CALIFORNIA'S REQUIREMENTS.
