My dog's groomer expressed her anal glands today while giving her a bath and clipping her toenails?
She says it's standard for her staff to do this. Why does this need to be done, what happens during it, how is it done and is it painful for the dog?
My dog was SO excited and happy to see me when I picked her up from her bath and nail clipping.

Dogs are always going to be excited when they see their owners... They LOVE you! :)
Expressing their anal glands is a good thing and should be done regularly if the dogs can't express them on their own. I have pugs, who normally have to get them done frequently but luckily my two have luck expressing them on their own, so my vet does theirs only a couple times a year. Anal glands are sacs that fill with green, nasty smelling fluid. If they fill up too much, they can become impacted and infected and need drained. Some dogs have chronic issues with this and they need to be removed.
Glad your groomer did it!

What breed of dog do you have? Sometimes smaller dogs have a hard time doing this on their own so it is a good idea to have your groomer or vet take care of it regularly. It isn't painful, just a little weird for the dog. There is a small amount of pressure and usually you have to lift the tail to do it. The real problem can come if you neglect a dog that cannot express these glands on their own. They can get infected as bacteria builds, an abscess can form and rupture...all of this is very uncomfortable for your dog. I would suggest the next time you go to the groomers ask if they can show you how they express your dog's glands. Many groomers are happy to do this for you, they can even show you how to locate them and give you tips if you ever want to do this yourself. It is very easy, and can be done while bathing.

Never had a groomer for my dogs who didn't express their anal glands, it's part of the usual service, along with cleaning the ears and cutting the nails.

It doesn't hurt the dog, some dogs needs this done and it's not an issue, just a matter of expressing any liquid stored in the anal glands. It smells awful, so better the groomer does it than you.
Dogs should be excited to see you when you pick them up, that's normal behavior if you have a bond with your dog.

Your dog's anal glands do not need to be expressed unless your dog is having a problem. Most dogs are able to release the fluid manually when they make a bowl movement. Normally when they express the anal gland they stick the fingers inside of the dogs anus and pops a bubble type gland and a runny, poop, lubricant type substance comes out. Normally it doesn't hurt, it is uncomfortable but nothing to worry about.

They dont need to be xpressed too often unless your dog is really straining to poop. All they do is stick their finger in their butt. The finger is put in with lube sot heir is no irritation.. all is does is releases the extra poop/liquid that is caught in the glands that the dog cannot poop out.
