Do fillings hurt without numbing?

I'm 15 and I'm getting a filling tomorrow but I'm scared about the numbing... I don't like the feeling and I've read some deaths from it. I want to get a filling without the numbing. Does it hurt? If its a normal size cavity? Please help? :(

You won't die. I'm sure of it. I've had much worse, and I'm still kicking. Most deaths occur from a filling that has gone untreated for too long, and infection has gone down through the tooth and into the jaw. (This is rare, and you'd know it's happening to you because it's EXTREMELY painful).

Some cavities are shallow enough that you don't need to be numbed for them, and the drilling doesn't hurt at all. Most cavities, however, are deep enough that your dentist will need to numb you. And you'll want to be numbed. If you've never had a tooth nerve exposed, you don't know how painful it can be. (crowns are the worst) Most dentists won't drill that deep without numbing, so it's not your call whether or not to be numbed.

It depends on how close to the it is to the nerve of the tooth. It can be painful if it is close and the vibration of the drill irritates the nerve, but if it is a small cavity that is not that deep, you will feel the vibrations, but you shouldn't feel any pain. Your best bet is to ask the dentist how deep the cavity is and if it will affect and irritate the nerve. Then you can make a better decision as to whether or not you should have the novicaine injection.

I would definitely get numbed. I dont know a person in this world who could get there tooth drilled and be able to withstand the pain. It is so sensitive. Most likely, your not gonna die, you have a better chance of winning the lottery than dying.
