  • Why is my milk expiring so fast?

I just bought a half-gallon of milk (last Thursday or so), and the sell by date is October 9th (in 8 days). I just poured a glass of it, and it was horribly sour.

I keep it in my shared dorm room mini-fridge, which is definitely cold enough. We've had things freeze if we turn it up more. However, my roommate has been keeping small amounts of soiled milk in small bottles in the fridge (she wants to save the bottle to use for water or more milk from the cafeteria, but she's a slob and hasn't EVER cleaned it out before it's gone sour). I used to throw them away when they went bad (sometimes they even curdled and got solid in the bottom), but that started bothering her so I figured it's her mess to clean up anyway. Could having sour milk be causing this problem? I had only drank like a fourth of the bottle before I had to throw it away, and I always kept the lid on and the door was closed most of the time.

  • Can anyone recommend some noise-cancelling headphones?

I just moved into my college dorm to start my freshman year, and to my unpleasant surprise, my roommate snores. Horribly. I've tried going to bed before her, but she goes to sleep too early for that to work. And I've bought some white noise tracks for my iPod, but my earbuds don't quite do the job and I can still hear it, even with the volume turned up. My last option is to either switch rooms or buy a nice pair of headphones, so I'll go with headphones. They'll be useful for studying too, since the snoring distracts me while I'm working.

I was looking for a recommendation of some nicer headphones that will get the job done (let as little noise in as possible--she's pretty loud) without bankrupting me. I need some that are comfortable to sleep in as well as to wear around. Thanks!

  • Is it OK to use Veet/Nair on a bikini line on sensitive skin?

    So, some background:

I had never shaved my bikini line until about a month ago (I always had swimsuits that made it a non-necessity). I did everything I could to prevent razor burn and all that (used TONS of shaving cream, went with the grain, new razor, etc.) but I still had tons of little red marks, and although it wasn't itchy, it was really painful for a few days, like something was poking me all along the area I had shaved. It didn't even really get rid of most of the hair.

Now that I'm more into summer and will be spending time at the pool, it's time to try cleaning up that line again. However, I really didn't enjoy shaving there, and it was more unsightly with the bumps AND the hair than the hair would've been. Waxing isn't really an option, so I'm wondering if I could try Veet or Nair in that area and get better results with less irritation. I've never used it on my legs or anywhere before, but I'm just exploring some options. Does it burn? Does it remove the hair better than shaving does?

Also, if I decided to use Nair or Veet, I would try it on my legs and less sensitive areas first, just to make sure I didn't have some sort of reaction to it.

  • What does the A in "LGTQA" stand for?

I just barely saw this variation of LGBTQ, and I was wondering what the A stood for. I couldn't find an answer right away, so I figured I'd bring it here and give 2 easy points. Is it for asexual?

  • Can I wear these heels to a job interview?

I have a job interview for a waiter position tomorrow, and I've chosen my outfit. I have a great pair of heels that goes with it, but I don't know if heels are ok. The ones I want to wear are about 2 or so inches high, the styles is plain (no buckles or bows or anything) and they're nude-colored. Would these be ok to wear to an interview, or should I go with something flat and darker? My outfit is pretty bright and springy (coral skirt and blue-striped top), and I think these shoes go really well with it. Thoughts?

  • Mortal Instruments/Infernal Devices family tree?

I heard there was meant to be a family tree in the back of Clockwork Princess, which I was really interested in seeing. However, I'm a dope, and bought the Kindle version of the book, which doesn't have the tree. I've read Clockwork Princess, so you wouldn't be spoiling anything. Could anyone provide a link to me of the family tree that is given in the back of the book? Thanks!

  • What happened to Jessamine in the Infernal Devices?

I'm currently reading Clockwork Princess (I've only just started), and I think I've forgotten what happened to Jessamine in Clockwork Prince. I've looked it up, but since it just be a spoiler, I can't find it anywhere. I don't want to go back to read the book again, so if you could tell me, that would be magnificent! Thanks!

  • Which Sims 3 expansion pack would you recommend?

I'm planning on expanding my Sims 3 game again, but I only want to spend $20 this time. I already have World Adventures, Ambitions, and Late Night. My options are Generations, Pets, and possibly University or Seasons (there's no online price, but they might be on sale in the store). The others are a little more than I want to spend. Which of these four would you recommend?

  • Transcribing mRNA... Which side do I copy?

For a Bio assignment, I have to transcribe a DNA strand to mRNA and then use the codons to determine the amino acids. I understand transcription and translation and all, so that's not my problem. The assignment gave me the DNA strand with BOTH base pairs. It's written like this:

    TA

    GC

    CG

    CG

    CG

    AT

    etc.

When transcribing to the mRNA, should I use the left sequence or the right?

  • Should I follow up after a job interview at a shoe store?

I had my first interview after MONTHS of filling out applications on Tuesday and I have yet to hear anything. When I left the interview on Tuesday, they said that I did very well and they were going to do second interviews and I'd probably get a call. They said that if i did, it would be later in the week. So now it's Saturday, and I haven't heard anything. I'm about to graduate HS, and I'm desperate for a non-fast food job. If they don't call by the end of today, should I call them on Monday to ask about the position? I've read on job-hunting sites that a follow-up is necessary, but those sites are mostly geared toward those looking for careers at serious businesses, not Shoe Carnival.

I would send a thank you letter, but I wouldn't know where to send it or the interviewers' last names. Should I call on Monday, or should I just leave it be? Has anyone had an experience with a job like this where follow up got you the job or at least a second interview?

  • Is wearing a cardigan to an interview formal enough?

I've got an interview at a local shoe store tomorrow for a part time position, and I don't know what to wear. It's my first interview, so I want to make a good impression. I had on a black pencil skirt, a light mauve shirt (one of the ones that ties at the top in the front.), and a white cardigan. My mom seems to think that the cardigan isn't formal enough, but I'm not sure. I had it rolled up nicely to about the elbows. It was a little long and has pockets on the side, which is what makes me think my mom is right. Here's a picture of one similar to it: https://www.google.com/search?q=long+white+cardiga...

I would forgo the cardigan, but the shirt is a tank top, and obviously I can't wear that to an interview. Help!

  • Wen trying to insert a tampon, should I feel like I'm forcing it in?

I've had my period for close to 5 years now, and I still haven't been able to use tampons. I have the super-slender tampax pearls, and I've used some lubricant to help, but after all this time I just can't do it. I can only get it in about a third of the way, and any further I have to push really hard, and it hurts too badly to go any further. I'm a virgin, so it's possible that it's my hymen. Did anyone else out there have this problem? How did you solve it?

  • For a reasearch paper, should I make my table fit on one page, or is it OK if it goes onto two pages?

It's not especially long, but if I move it to the next page, about 1/3 of the previous page will be blank. I think it looks lame... But so does a table split between two pages. Also, if I don't split it, only about 3 cells of the table will go onto the next page. I can't resize it, because I already have.

The paper is in MLA format, if this means anything.

  • How to politely tell my friends that I don't want to be treated as a charity case?

So there's a lot of complicated background to this story, but I'll summarize it as well as I can.

I'm a high school senior who is possibly asexual and who has only gone on one date ever. I have been asked out on two other occasions, but was busy on both of the weekends. My friends, who have become more and more flirtatious and interested in boys, seem upset by the fact that there seems to be no interest in me. I have said repeatedly that I don't care much about dating, and I assumed they understood.

3 of these close friends (there are 4 girls in our close group, including me) have been/will be asked to prom, which is next month. When I saw them and one of our close guy friends today, they all dropped hints about me going to prom, and made it sound like this close guy friend would be the one asking me. I have no problem going on a date or to a dance with him, I just feel like if he did ask, it would be because I'm a charity case who has had no "fun" in high school.

I absolutely detest the feeling of someone being so condescending toward me, and it makes me angry that they wouldn't respect that I really am not interested in prom. I don't, however, want to outright refuse him if he asks, because that would be a pretty rude thing to do. How can I communicate to my friends that I appreciate that they care, but really can't stand the lack of respect they have for me. I don't want to come across to them as rude and ungrateful, which I think I do anyway. If any of you have felt like this, you'll understand. There's just nothing more demeaning than being the pity date--especially when there's not really anything to pity. I also think that my friends don't believe me when I say I don't want to go, because really, who doesn't want to go to prom? I feel like they think it's just a defense mechanism so that if I don't get asked, I'll be able to say, "nah, didn't want to go anyway".

  • Why do I only ever feel ovulation pain on my right side?

Every few months, when I ovulate I get a dull aching. (Not every month. Only every 2-4 months) I've only ever felt this ovulation pain on my right side. NEVER on the left. Why is this?

I'm not worried about anything, as I understand that this is perfectly normal, just curious. I tried googling it, but couldn't find anything definitive.

  • Small bump on my gum about 2 weeks after wisdom tooth removal?

I had 4 impacted wisdom teeth removed on Friday the 15th (about 2 weeks ago), and things seem to be healing pretty nicely, except there is a bump above my 12 year molar on the upper right. It's been there since about day 3 or 4, and it used to hurt, but now when I touch it, it doesn't. When I first noticed it, I called the oral surgeon's office to see what they recommended. They just said to increase my salt rinses to stop any infection if it's starting up there. I did that, but the bump still hasn't gone down.

I don't think it's an infection, as it doesn't hurt and my gums aren't inflamed, as far as I can tell. I just worry that it could cause or lead up to an infection. Does anyone know what this bump might be and how to make it go away?

  • Pain on fifth day after wisdom teeth removal that is new, but not dry socket...?

I had all 4 impacted wisdom teeth removed Firday around noon, and things have been going pretty well since. I felt hardly any pain from any of the 4 extraction sites, all that hurt were the stitches (which still hurt quite a bit, because they are attached to the lower part of my cheek. It hurts to talk for too long or open my mouth too wide.) But tonight, I've noticed that the upper right site had started to ache. It's not severe, so it's almost definitely not dry socket. However, none of the sites have hurt this badly before. I seem to be getting worse instead of better in this spot. I tried a good salt rinse. In case there was food stuck there, but that did nothing. Is this pain normal? Is it normal for pain to increase so late after the surgery? I'm considering calling tomorrow to see if they can do anything about the stitches. Should I insist on seeing the doctor to check out the site? I'm just worried that it could be infection or something, even though I haven't noticed any puss or extra swelling, (The right side is bigger than the left right now, but both have been calming down) but I'm a little scared to poke around and harm something.

  • Trying to get a first job by following up on the application... What do I do?

I'm looking for my first job, and I've submitted close to a dozen applications for work around my town. I haven't been called for a single interview, so I was going to try following up on the applications to see if I could get something that way. I figured I would just call the businesses and talk to them, but I'm not sure exactly how to do it. Who do I ask for? What do I say? How do I seem assertive without being TOO assertive? I want to seem polite and respectful of the employers, but also like someone who wants to go after things, especially since the only experience I have is a little volunteer work. I don't want it to seem like I'm harrassing them until they give me the job.

Also, I submitted the majority of these applications about a week ago. Is a week later a decent period to wait before checking up on things?

  • Some questions about Jack Reacher...?

I just saw the film, and I haven't read the book, so I think I missed a few things, because I wasn't terribly interested, especially toward the end. My biggest question was why did the Russians want that construction company? I don't remember any motive being explained, but I might have just missed it. And what was the cop's connection to them? He just said he "didn't have a choice" to be a part of them. Was it ever explained WHY he had no choice? And what exactly was Jeb's purpose? (The guy who got shot because he wouldn't chew off his fingers.) Was he just a lackey, or did he have any real importance?

    Thanks!

  • What could this hard lump be?

I have a hard lump about the size of a sesame seed (in circumference, not necessarily height) on the gum right below one of my teeth. It is on the outward side of the gum. I've recently had a lot of work done in this tooth due to a crown that is giving the dentist difficulty. I've been to get it fixed 4 times in the last 2 months, but the crown keeps coming back from the lab not fitting because of some bad molds by the technicians.

The first two times that I had the temporary crown put on, I had some mild soreness and a little bit of sensitivity (as is to be expected). This previous time I went, the dentist drilled a little more to smooth out the tooth to make the mold and crown fit better when I finally got the porcelain one. As far as I know, nothing especially bad happened.

A couple of days later, I noticed the soreness wasn't wearing off and was in fact getting worse. I woke up at night several times with my whole jaw and ear aching. I started taking ibuprofen for the pain, and have been taking it in halves a couple of times a day for the last couple of weeks.

After getting the temporary on again, I noticed a small bump had developed under the tooth which he worked on. It was hard and didn't hurt too badly to touch. I thought maybe it was infection, but it's small and doesn't seem full of puss. I also haven't noticed any other symptoms, but I've been on ibuprofen nearly constantly. I later concluded that it was my wisdom tooth trying to come in, but today I went to an oral surgeon, and the bump is definitely not a wisdom tooth. I've looked online for similar situations, just so I can find out what the bump IS, but I haven't had any luck. All I can seem to find are people who have had abscesses, but my bump doesn't fit what people are saying about what happened to them.

I'm going back on Monday to get the final crown done, and I'll definitely ask him what's going on. Until then, I'm still worried about it. Has anyone else had a similar situation and know what it could be?
