Is there a piece of advice...?

That someone has given you that has been utterly useless to you or has made your situation worse? I'm talking about things that people commonly say to others but that aren't always true.

Some examples:

Love conquers all. (Love isn't always enough. Ask the significant other of an alcoholic, drug addict, or adulterer.)

There are two sides to every argument. (No, sometimes there really is only one side, like being accused of something you didn't do, or someone projecting their insecurities onto you.)

We teach people how to treat us. (I don't think most victims of bullying would agree with that. And that's not even counting the random meanness of strangers.)

You can do anything if you try. (If that were true I would be an expert whitewater rafter, a famous concert violinst, and the first female President of the United States. There are some things you just can't do no

matter how hard you try.)

What are some pieces of advice that went sour for you?

Update:

Edited to add: Terry: One only has to do a quick reality check to see that these sayings and others just don't work in real life. I don't think I am missing any point here.

lol. Some of the examples you gave made me laugh.

Mine might not be the typical advice we hear everyday, but, here it goes:

"Just stretch out and you will automatically float". This is from everyone who has tried to teach me to swim. If they knew how much water i end up gulping each time I sink to the bottom of the pool, they would not continue saying that.

Oh another one. When I visit the hospital for a blood sample or something that involves blood and needles. They always say:

"Hold on. This will only hurt a second"...um NOOOO!!! It hurts till the next day. Are you serious?!

You are serious missing the point of those expressions... obviously not every is going to follow them and be a good person... but ok for example you can be a violinst if thats somthing you love to do if it is your passion are you gonna stop b c your not in front of a really big crowd?! And there is always two sides to every story, and if you truely love someone with all your heart being a addicts or. Alcohol probs wouod only be an obstacle
