Why is my laptop having frequent crashes?

It would seem to be centered around Adobe flash, as after the crash I have to download Adobe flash to watch any video content. It is not just IE, as the crash can occur just as frequently with FF. Anyone out there with a bit of know-how, or practical experience with this, able to help?

Update:

Andrew, I thought, at first it was overheating, but I have a had a Targus laptop fan on it for almost 8 months now. I feel the comp periodically after it crashes, to see if heat has anything to do with it. But, IMO, it is not hot enough to the touch to consider this the cause. It would seem to be that content is the issue. The most common scenario is when viewing videos on sites (not simply youtube, and most often when viewing yahoo stories from the yahoo homepage. I would guess scripts would be the issue...or at the very least a large part of. I can tell you that each time it crashes...and I mean it simply shuts down, power off, abruptly....I have to reload adobe flash to be able to view video content of any sort that utilizes flash content. I hope this helps someone to better determine what the issue might be. Thanks for the input thus far.

If the screen is going black or blue it could be a memory issue or a graphics card issue. But unlikely it doesn't happen frequently.

Doubt it has anything to do with a kernel physical memory dump unless your actually getting an error or STOP message along with the blue screen.

Is it overheating? You may want to set your laptop on some sort of flat surface or get a laptop fan. You can get one at radioshack for like $10-15.

If your using too much memory you could try and increase the virtual memory.

Go to System->Advanced system settings->Advanced tab->Under performance hit settings->Advanced tab->Under Virtual memory hit change->Check the automatically manage box.

You could also set it to a custom size yourself but only if you know what your doing.

The fact that it just shuts down suddenly is really interesting. It's hard to imagine that it's a software problem. However, for the sake of being complete, uninstall flash from the control panel. Reboot. reinstall flash.

More likely, it really is a memory or processor problem. There are handfulls of ram and processor testors that you can download for free. Download one of them that you have to boot to, since these will be the most effective.

I see that your question is about to expire...

shoot me an email if you want.
