"GOD's particle" has nothing to do with religion. It refers to a particle which existence was predicted by Higgs in the 1960's but could be observed only last year. The scientific name of this particle is thus "Higgs's boson".
It plays a key role in the standard model of particle physics because it is linked to the Higgs mechanism, which fixes the mass of all matter particles. In other words, if Higgs's prediction had revealed wrong, we would have had to find another reason why electron, protons and all matter like us has a mass.
Where did it get that 'God particle' nickname from? From a book by Leon Lederman. For decades, experimental particle physicist have been hunting down this particle. And really, for decades, they have been coming back home with nothing in their bags. But they were still very confident that they would find it because all the other predictions of the Standard model of particle physics had proved right. And all these predictions relied on the presence of Higgs's boson. They were just getting impatient.
So the first title of Lederman's book was "That goddamn particle!" - this expressed clearly the impatience of the community. But the publisher - who was no physicist, rather a well-advised salesman - thought that without the 'damn', the book would sell better, attracting people with religious interests and sounding much more serious. So the title was changed and Higgs's boson got its nickname.
To make things clear, in any case, whatever the beliefs of professional scientists, they do not take 'God' as a working hypothesis. Einstein did once, and this led him to his only really wrong conclusion.

The GOD particle is the popular name of the higgs boson,an elementary particle that 'gives' mass to other known particles.it does not have constituent particles since it is an elementary particle that is formed as a result of excitation of the higgs field.it is of high importance in physics as it is an indispensable part of a mechanism that explains the breaking of electroweak symmetry.this symmetry breaking is responsible for the mass of W and Z bosons and thus the short range of the weak force at low energies(below 100GeV or 10^5 K).though this is not the only function of the god particle,it is thought to be one of its most important functions.
