Vw bus 1978 type 4 does not idle when cold is there a sensor that needs replacing?

Is ther an automatic choke? It is fuel injected and brand new filter

    There is no "choke" however you do have a cold start valve (actually an injector at the base of the plenum).

    Poor idle can be from many different things such as the cold start valve, air flow sensor, EGR and others. Vacuum leaks are also common and a pain on those engines.

    It should be fuel injected. Not being familiar with the system I have no answer. This is a pretty unique car from the maintenance stand point and my references do not cover it. There are several good forums on period VW's and I would suggest you find one or at least a parts supplier that has good tech information on line. Maybe the Auto Zone site has an online manual for this car. Registration at the site is free and will give access to what info they have.
