My SD camera card randomly stopped working?

Hey there. So, I was taking photos today at a horseshow and I had been shooting for about 2 hours, but then randomly my camera refused to take photos. I looked at my camera’s screen and it said

“Card cannot be accessed. Reinsert/change the card or format card with camera”

I tried taking it out and putting it back in, turning off and on the camera, and I even tried blowing on the card (because I’ve heard that sometimes works) My camera is a Canon Rebel T3i and I love it, but this was literally in the middle of my photography! I also tried plugging my camera into the computer, but that didn’t work, so then I tried putting the chip directly in the computer but it didn’t even show up on my Desktop. I have a Mac, and I put another one of my SD cards in the computer and it worked. I know its not my camera thats being faulty because I just switched out the memory chips and it was just fine. I have no idea whats going on! I really want the photos that are on that chip! What can I do?

Your memory card is corrupted. There are different causes to this (not formatting regularly, deleting in-camera, powering off even if memory card activity light is on, not turning camera off before card is removed, not using the Safely Remove Removeable Device in the computer, using the camera as a viewer to show off pictures taken, etc.).

The only solution is to throw away the card and replace with a new and freshly formatted one. The pictures in the old card? Try copying whatever you can recover before throwing away then.

Most likely the card's data is corrupted somehow. If the SD card reader can't read the information, then it would be difficult to retrieve the photos. I think you should attempt to read the SD card with an external card reader to see if you can retrieve the information. Do not format the card as it is still possible to retrieve partial data from a data retrieving service.

This the reason that SD cards suck so bad... they fail randomly, without warning, and the only thing you can do is get a new one. If there are photos on the card you may, or you may not be able to recover them, it depends on how badly damaged the card is when you try.

CF cards aren't that much bigger and you certainly can't complain about the weight difference... never should have gone to SD.

Try formatting the card directly on your camera
