If I want to go into zoological medicine, do I have to choose between aquatic animals and zoo/wild animals?
I have always loved animals. When I was younger, I decided that I was going to be a veterinarian for small, domestic animals like dogs and cats. Now, I am thinking about going into zoological medicine. I have heard that zoological medicine deals with these animals:
-zoo animals
-free ranging wildlife species
-aquatic animals
-birds
-reptiles
-amphibians
-non-domestic companion animals
If I REALLY wanted to work with zoo animals (like tigers and monkeys,) but I also REALLY wanted to work with aquatic animals (like dolphins and sea turtles,) would I have to choose between the two? Or can I do both?

There are many zoos in the country that have aquatic animals including dolphins and if you could find a job there then you wouldn't have to choose. However, the vast majority of zoos do not have many aquatic species. The fact of this profession is that you take whatever job you can get because there are more veterinarians that want these positions than there are positions available.

Many young people want to become vets because of the close work with animals. It is a romantic idea. You will have to deal with plenty of nasty wounds, poop, vomit, blood, death, long hours and not much financial reward. However the truth is that going to vet school is very difficult and costly.Just being excepted into a good school is not easy and requires a high GPA and plenty of added volunteering and credits. You will have an enormous student loan dept(100,000.00 +) upon graduation and will work for many years just paying off the dept. I suggest you work at an animal shelter for several summers and do work as a tech or animal trainer first. There are several good schools that can provide you training for a smaller cost compared to vet school. Then if you are still interested in medicine go for it.
