No luck with work- what should I do?

For the past week I have worked in an office 5 minutes from my house. It is a clothing manufacturing company. I have not had any formal training, I have no experience in the fashion industry, but I applied for the job because I would be coming out of the unpredictable finance industry and it asked for someone who is self-managed and proactive. However, the director there is a bit of a hothead and speaks to colleagues and members of his family (family business) like something on the bottom of his shoe. Today even, his wife works in accounts and he was shouting at her in front of everyone and he took one of her invoices and scrunched it up and threw it in the bin. I heard her sniffling and sobbing in the corner. There is always a tension in the office, like walking on eggshells. When he went on his lunch, the other colleagues shrugged their shoulders to show the weight had been lifted from their shoulders! One colleague has to whisper if he is talking about the director. Also, he has been there since August last year and had had no CONTRACT! There are no clear fire exits either and no health and safety documentation stuck on the walls.

I have no set schedule or plan of action as to what has to be done day to day. I have to wait for the director or his brother to give me something to do. I have not been formally trained either, just thrown in at the deep end. I have seen the hothead was too busy throwing wobblers and screaming at other colleagues who have been there several years/months and they get things wrong today and for the past week... so I did not want him to go off on one with me. I even had to second guess myself about sending him an email asking if there was anything to do. I did not send the email because I did not want to anger him. I should not be in a workplace where I cannot approach the director should I?

My position has had a high turnover of staff... with alot of predecessors practically walked out because they did not like the way the hothead spoke to them.

So, I remembered on the job application, where it stated that the potential employee would have to use their initiative and be proactive. I made up a spreadsheet to be sent to the factory in a few days time of items that we were waiting on this week( fabric samples etc)... also with it being a long bank holiday weekend... I wanted the factory to know what we needed and by when.. because our client has expectations and deadlines!!Hothead shouted over to me "What are you doing?" I told him and he seemed alright. Then, at the end of the shift he took issue with my work and said that I have wasted my time!

He then told me not to come in tomorrow and that he would call me in the morning. I thought I was doing something good.

Do you think I should just leave the job?

Ultimately, it's up to you. It sounds like he may be firing you? But if you need the money, I'd say to stick it out a bit longer until it's fully exhausted. If you aren't in dire need of the money, just quit. There's no use working for someone who doesn't appreciate what you're doing and is rude.
