Why am I teaching simple division math in college?

I was asked to tutor people that need help in math. I agreed. My first 2 students need help in simple division? Both are in their late 50's.. What the hell are they doing in college? They don't have time to go through grade school again!!!

OH, AND YOUR TAXES ARE PAYING THEM TO BE THERE!!!! (Obama welfare types)

Update:

Edit, this is a volunteer position. No pay. I'm a student. I thought I would be teaching pre-algebra or something...

Division is hard. I remember when I first learned it in grade school. Some numbers do not divide evenly, so you will have a remainder. It gets even harder when you divide by 2 or 3 digit numbers. At that point, you have to guesstimate what number to multiply them by to get the highest possible value that doesn't exceed the dividend.

It gets even more complicated when you want the result in decimal form. Some fractions divide in such a way that the decimals never terminate, they just keep going and going. In that case, you have to put a bar over that number or group of numbers to indicate that it repeats indefinitely. Then there are some fractions that take a long *** time before the decimal actually terminates, so unless you spend enough time to finish the problem, you might assume that it just goes on and never stops.

Did you know that our education system has been failing us for some decades now? In the 40's when I started school we were taught basics and girls were not coddled over boys, and the boys were allowed to be boys. When we got in trouble we knew the consequences. I moved to another part of NY state away from the NY public schools which in my opinion were the best in the country,we were taught culture as well there like Classical music, and the classical writings. Somewhere around the 50's we started change and did not all;ow for the different behavior of boys. In Europe they keep boys & girls separate for good practical reasons. I conclude by saying that when I joined the Navy and vied for Naval Schooling, many recruits had to be taught academics all over again, math being the worst failing of our education!

You are not teaching, you are collecting a paycheck and complaining about the job.

    That is not teaching.

    Stop complaining and start helping.

My tax monies were spent paying Ronald Reagans medical bills.

  • because their in their late 50s and they've forgotten all the stuff they learned 30 years ago?

EDIT: BY THE WAY... if their in their late 50s that means that they went to school "before all the liberal indoctrination" right? maybe school back then wasn't any better after all?

The dumbing down of America has achieved its objective.

The public school system is a "useful idiot" factory, churning out ignorant and gullible future criminals who will eagerly jump on the communism bandwagon as soon as it rolls into town.

I know, I used to work as a public high school teacher. It made me sick to watch kids getting churned through the communist indoctrination mill all day long.

    And how well it worked.

Public schools are an example of pure democracy in action. Every parent, rich and poor, wants their kids to get a free ride. They want their kids to get good grade for free, and they want their kids to get off the hook every time for misbehaving in school. And the community has a large influence over the local school district, so a principal can get fired if too many parents turn against him/her. So the principal has to appease these irresponsible parents to keep his/her job.

In other words, it is mob rule.

Maybe the sign being held by a teacher at a protest in Wisconsin says it all. Her sign read:

Unions OUR my cup of tea.

When the teachers teaching the kids don't even know proper grammar, then how do you expect the kids to learn it. I am sure there are some math teachers at this level also.

Some adults just don't grasp simple math concepts whether on welfare or not.

You should not be working with people with that attitude. These people want to learn and this is how you talk about them?

I guess the elderly are another addition to the list of things that conservatives hate.
