Been There - how to work with solar arcs?

Been There, i just saw your answer for the question "has predictive astrology ever worked for you?"

It was very thorough and informative. I like an astrologer who approaches their craft with observation and study of evidence rather than just going with what the text books say (though there ARE many great texts, the pros will know more than the newbs)

You mentioned that solar arcs were the best form of predictive astrology.

Have to admit that i have no clue how to use them and how to get predictions out of them.

Could you give me an explination of what exactly solar arcs are and how to work with them? Thanks :)

    Solar Arc:

    Solar = Sun

Arc = movement around a circle (the circle of the zodiac)(as opposed to movement in a straight line)

Therefore, Solar Arc Directions are a form of progression that is based on the movement of your Secondary Progressed Sun.

And applied to all the other planets as well.

    Like this.

Say that your Natal Sun is 3:00 Aries (3 degrees, 0 minutes .. I'm not going to mess with minutes in these examples)

(1.) Find the current position of your Secondary Progressed Sun.

Ex.: Say this year, Sec. Prog. Sun is at 23:00 Aries.

(2.) Find the difference (distance) between your current Sec. Prog. Sun and your Natal Sun. Do this by subtracting the Natal Sun position from the current Sec. Prog. Sun position

This tells you how far the Sun has progressed since you were born.

    Ex. (23:00 Aries) - (3:00 Aries) = 20:00 degrees of movement

(3.) Add this movement to EVERY natal planet in your chart.

Ex. #1: Say Natal Moon at 4:00 Leo. (4:00 Leo) + (20:00) = 24:00 Leo is the position of your Solar Arc Moon

Ex. #2: Say Natal Mercury at 15 Pisces. (15:00 Pisces) + (20:00) = 35:00 Pisces, which is 15:00 Aries. 15:00 Aries is the position of your Solar Arc Mercury.

When the addition takes you over "30:00" for the Sum, you subtract 30 and move ahead one sign, which is why 35:00 Pisces minus 30:00 gives you 5:00 Aries.

(4.) Now look for any major aspects (conjunction, sextile, square, trine, opposition) between any of your 10 Solar Arc planets and your 10 natal planets.

Use an orb of only 1 degree (+/- 1 degree) .. this means only the almost-exact (partile) aspects.

The influence lasts for approximately 1 year, as long as the Solar Arc planet is within one degree of a partile aspect .

(since Secondary Progressed Sun moves at approximately 1 degree a year, the Solar Arc aspect lasts for about 1 year).

Note that in this system, there is no retrograde motion. So while someone born while Mercury was Retrograde, will have their Secondary Prog. Mercury moving backwards (until it turns Direct again) ... there is never any retrograde motion with Solar Arc Directions.

Interpretations depend on the nature of the planet, combined with the nature of the aspect.

Sun would have to do with reputation, Moon with emotions/home/family/real/estate/women, Mercury with mental activities/travel/learning, etc

So you have some outer influence (the nature of the Solar Arc planet) affecting your inner being (the nature of the natal planet) either easy or difficult (depending on the aspect. For conjunctions, easy/difficult depends on whether the Solar Arc planet is a benefic or malefic).

A FAR EASIER way to find you Solar Arc planets is to buy one of the professional software programs for you computer: Win*Star, Solar Fire, Kepler, Sirius ...

but not everyone is in a position to buy or use one .. and Solar Arc IS easy to calculate by hand.

Noel Tyl is the foremost authority on Solar Arc directions. You asked about transiting Uranus opposing your soalr arc Mars. Look first in your natal chart for the conditions and aspects to Natal Mars. What house is Natal Mars and SA Mars in? Is your natal Mars or SA Mars on an angle 1st house, 4th house, 7th house or 10th house? More surprise to be expected if on the angles. In any case, the affairs of those houses will be given new, unusual and spontaneous energy! Not a bad thing. You'll have a lot of energy at your disposal in that area of life, on and off, for about a year w/transiting Uranus opposing SA Mars. The energy will subside when SA Mars goes out of orb. The nature of these planets make planning somewhat difficult, OK, maybe even impossible, but it can liven up your life. Perhaps there is a change you need to make? You can do it now.
