BMW for 17 year old..?
I'm considering getting a 2006 BMW 325i AWD. I've looked at previous posts on Y!A regarding cars for us 17 year olds & all I see is stuff like how your first car shouldn't be as expensive (I agree with that) and also how a teenager with a BMW is rich & spoiled (no).
I used a 2002 Honda Odyssey minivan when I was 16 which was my mom's, and shortly before I turned 17 my dad allowed me to use his 2004 Acura MDX, which is what I use now. (and have been using for nearly a year). My dad has agreed to buy me either a 2013 Subaru BRZ, a 2013 Subaru Impreza or a 2006 BMW 325i. First off, BRZ has practically non existent rear seats. Second, I don'r want him to shell out cash for a brand new Impreza. Third, as I do realize BMWs are expensive, it's obviously a used & I'm getting it for $12,000 (more than half of the brand new Impreza).
I realize there's the whole maintenance issue but that won't be that big of a problem, and the reason I like the 325i is because it drives smoothly & it's a nice car to drive.
and no, I will not be racing, drinking, smoking, etc. while driving although I do understand why most people stereotype teenagers to be the worst drivers, I've seen a lot of teens do this.
My question is, do you think my choice of driving a BMW is wise?
and no, I'm not gonna get a car older than 2005-2006.
and yes, I need a car because I'll be moving out & living on res for university so I cannot continue using the family spare car (2004 Acura MDX)
No, I will not be financing it or getting a loan for it, I'm paying for it full with cash.
Dad is paying the $12,000 for the car, no loans or anything.
He is paying for insurance and maintenance and fuel, but once the summer rolls in (and I'm finished with my studies) I'm gonna get a job and start paying instead. Yeah, i know what you mean, I don't like being financially dependent on him and it probably will haunt me as the time passes

I think there's nothing wrong with a BMW for a 17 year old. They're cool-looking, snazzy cars.
But, wait a minute. Who's paying for this $12,000 car? Will it be paid for out-right or will your dad get a loan for it? That is STILL a lot of money.
If I were you, I wouldn't go over $8,000. That's plenty for a 17 year old. I think, then, that the issue isn't the MAKE of the car (BMW), but the PRICE of the car.
Does your dad agree to pay for this? Can you kick in some money, too, from a job or something? Maybe $1000? Who's paying for gas and insurance and repair?
My parents gave me EVERYTHING growing up and it haunted me a bit. I wish I would have contributed somewhat to the gifts they gave me.
Good luck. :)

Get it, if you can pay cash for it. Car payments, on top of insurance, maintenance, and gas can be a burden. Also, financing and paying interest to have an asset which only depreciates in value is a stupid waste of money.

I was on Yahoo for something or other, then this question was shown on the sidebar...
