wood burning stoves.?

If you have a wood burning stove installed, do you need to have the chimney lined first?

After such cold weather I thought I'd treat myself to one buit have no idea what's needed.

Thanks in advance for any help.

It has to be installed to a certain level to get a Heta Certificate to keep the building regulations and your household insurer happy.

Under the current requirements the chimney does need to be lined, but the best way to establish the correct facts for your area is to go and look at the specialist stores offering wood burners and talk to them about fitting etc.

You can buy it on line once you know about the size for your room, the chimney liner and if you need a air brick, extra segments etc.

A lot of chimney sweeps now fit to certificate standard as well and will tell you what to get in for the fitting.

But cost out logs in your area, as they are not cheap to run if you have to buy in seasoned wood. They are messy and continual hard work and you have to be prepared for the constant dust level indoors. In other words if you are house proud it will not work.

Have to be swept as well, and it is like feeding a donkey on strawberries in terms of how much wood it will eat,

Yes, the chimney must have a flute that is in good condition installed prior to burning any wood. The chimney must also protrude a certain distance from the roof line. This protects your home.

Keep in mind that insurance costs go up, you need the firewood, and if you have to make the firewood yourself, it is a lot of work. You will also need a place to store the wood and allow it to dry for a year or two.

Do research before choosing to get a wood burner...its not as free as people think.

If you live in the UK and the chimney is sound (no broken mid-feathers) and it has a good draw, all you need is for the rear metal flue from the stove to protrude far enough up the chimney so as to leave enough room to fix a sealing plate. Burning logs, especially damp logs is the quickest way to clog up your chimney with suit. Get it cleaned regularly and everything will be fine. If you live in America - god knows.

They make a Double walled pipe that is up to code for you to use to exhaust the combustion gasses out through the chimney. If you have an older house with a brick chimney chances are you can run the double walled pipe straight down it and connect it to your wood burner. Also, get a humidifier.

You need to check local codes for your area.
