Pamela, the dementia might be due to the fact that he was under anesthesia during the surgery. This is what happened to my mother. She was lucid until after she had surgery, and then she began to hallucinate and was never well again. It could also be due to some medication he is taking. People I've known who have had pacemakers implanted actually were more alert and felt better, because their circulation was better.

My Dad felt better after the pacemaker was put in and i don't think his dementia got worse.
Maybe the hallucinating will lessen.

did he have dementia going nito the operation and it got worse? I have interviewed many people and one thing that I found was that sometimes, something triggers the dementia, often a fall and the person who has been maybe putting up a good front to that point, loses it and gives in - - but the above suggestions to check the meds is a good one.

That happened to my mother. I didnt know that the surgery to do the procedure would make her physically frail and that affected her mentally. I dont think she recovered from the anesthesia that causes memory loss. She deteriorated after that and I blame myself for letting the doctor implant the pacemaker.

Definitely talk to his doctor and ask this. Is he on any meds (cardiac or for other conditions he may have)? He may be having adverse reaction to something he's on and it may be as simple as just switching over to another medication. But this is definitely a condition his doctor needs to know about right away.
