disability benefits epidemic in America?

Opinions concerning the government awarding lifetime disability benefits for less than disabling conditions.

With 11,000,000 newly "disabled" under Owebama's liberal administration, how disabled are these folks? Certainly, there are some, but 11,000,000?? Does the entitled realize that it takes 2-3 workers, paying taxes to support just one person who claims they cannot do any sort of work ? That takes 22 to 33 million workers to support the lifestyle they seem to strive for.

Some, not all, of those seem to have the entitlement mentality that the government owes them a living.. What will happen when there are more disabled then actually working? This scenario is not too far fetched. Judith seems happy to see that everyone gets benefits, paid for by others. Would she also acknowledge that this rush to disability entitlements is not sustainable. We are creating a dependency that will be very hard, if not impossible to wean off when the money runs out.

Your thoughts??

I don't know how you can say that I am happy to see that everyone gets benefits. When I was employed by social security I believed, and still do, that the vast majority of people approved for disability at the hearing level and beyond are not severely disabled - many might be unemployable but not disabled. Unemployability is not to my mind a reason to award disability benefits. I find it very hard to believe that those 40% to 60% of people who go to a hearing who are approved were wrongly denied benefits at the initial or reconsideration levels. I don't know what I could possible have said to have given you any other impression. Usually I cite social security's laws and regulations or what I know takes place - doesn't mean that I agree with them. Maybe if you pay better attention to my answers you'll realize that I am merely advising people of their rights and how to go about filing, appealing, etc. That does NOT mean that I think they will be approved or that I think that they should be.

Still you and everyone needs to put this into proper perspective. There are 310 million Americans. Approximately 10% receive disability benefits. That includes both the SSI and social security disability programs - and keep in mind that some people with low social security benefits receive from both programs so it is possible that the total # of disabled people is under 10% of the population. The disability program isn't breaking the bank.

And while the number of people filing for disability has risen dramatically there hasn't been a corresponding increase in their approval rates. When I retired 15 years ago it took an average of 9 months in Michigan to hold a hearing from the date the request for a hearing was held; it now takes 2 years. What that tells me is that a whole lot of claims are being denied. Of course the alj's hear more than disability cases but still, the % of claims being approved hasn't increased along with the volume.

The vast majority of social security business is social security retirement and survivor claims. Over 90% of social security benefits which are paid out go to these two categories. While disability claims and issues are time-consumers the social security employees spend the vast majority of their time processing other workloads.
