--DOMA (the Defense of Marriage Act). The Supreme Court is currently reviewing the law. Based on what the Court decides, the law could be struck down (meaning that for gay people married in the 9 states that currently allow gay marriage, their marriage will be recognized at the federal level. This means they will be eligible for the same benefits--like health insurance, and being able to visit their partner in the hospital--as heterosexual married couples). It could also be upheld, and the benefits for married same-sex couples would still be restricted.
