Foreign Mormon Missionaries?

I know that Mormons go on a two-year mission in foreign countries, but does it go both ways? Do Mormons from other countries go on missions to the US?

Yes, they do. Thousands do. If you ever visit Temple Square in Salt Lake City, you would meet many many missionaries from foreign countries serving in the USA.

    Yes.

However often they stay in their countries.

In some South American countries nearly half the missionaries are from that (or neighboring) places. Some places have problems with visas and nearly all missionaries are natives.

In places like Europe where our church isn't growing as fast as place like Brazil it's mostly Americans, but we had a few Italian missionaries in my mission in Italy and they were all really cool and great to be with, I wish we had more of them.

I'd say roughly half of foreign missionaries sty in their country and about half go elsewhere - but if you're an Italian 18 year old Mormon boy your odds of going to Italy are probably greater than 50% on only 2 missions and less than 50% to go to the other 350 missions, so odds are far greater for them staying in their native land.

I recall meeting some missionaries of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints serving in my nick of the woods of the United States of America (Washington State) hailing from Sweden, Canada, England, Cambodia, Dominican Republic, Samoa, Peru, Hong Kong, Italy and Armenia.

When I was on my LDS mission to New Mexico, there was a missionary from Chile.

The most non-US missionaries serving in the US could be found at Temple Square in Salt Lake City; they'll have the flag of their home nation underneath their name tag which is written in the language of their home nation. For example, an Italian missionary name tag would say "Anziano/Sorella (insert surname here) La Chiesa di Gesù Cristo dei Santi degli Ultimi Giorni" with an Italian flag underneath.

    Yes, they do.

I have had personal contact with several missionaries here in California and in Utah that were sent here from other countries. The General Authorities have spiritual wisdom in the selection of where missionaries are sent and we trust them in those selections.

Our bishop's daughter went to Brazil and then came home because of sickness. She was then reassigned to the SLC Visitor's Center where one of her companions was from Brazil.

That is just one example. We also had a Brazilian missionary in our building that was serving in the local Spanish Branch. That is another example.

Sure. All the time. Once when we had the missionaries in our ward over for supper, one of my brothers had the bad manners to bring up illegal immigration. Fearing lest Elder Gomez' feelings might be hurt, I mentioned as how the Mexican Cession had created massive poverty and unemployment along the new border, and it was merely economic pressures that drove the illegal immigration. The other missionary, Elder Jake (a Navajo) leaned over and said quietly,. "The Indians were here first."

  • Yes, they do.

My two daughters took the missionary lessons from one sister from Boise Idaho and her companion from Mongolia.

My husband now works in the Missionary Training Center in Provo and meets missionaries from all over the world

The United States has the most missionaries, so it is usually one way.

i think it does. but until recently in our generations, not many have had access to become missionaries.

i think there will be many foreign missionaries in england and the united states if they are not already here.
