I've worked in restaurants for about 5 years now. I worked as a hostess and I now serve.
Depending on the restaurant, it can get very fast paced, very hectic, and very stressful, VERY quick lol.
But as long as your hostess is seating properly, and kitchen is working smoothly and you are keeping on your toes you should be fine during dinner/lunch rushes!
Tips:
Be friendly, always smile, ask how they are, introduce your self and let them know if they need anything to ask.
If you notice you've gotten tables that you haven't been to yet, just acknowlege them, let them know you'll be with them shortly and once you arrive apologize for the wait and get their drinks as quickly as possible.
When you run into the chatty cathy tables that will not stop talking to you and feel the need to tell you their life story, I always look over my shoulder, or look at another table, smile and say im so sorry i'll be right back! and avoid that table for a little bit until your other tables are taken care of
Team work as a server is very helpful, if you help your co-workers out they will be sure to help you as well. If my section isn't busy and I notice another server's section is really busy I always go over check on their tables, clear plates and ask the server if they need help with anything.
If you run into the infamous rude grumpy customers the best thing to do is kill them with kindness! Don't ever be rude to them, just be nice they look even more stupid then...
Make sure you know how to handle a tray, proper balance, dont want any spills. SO practice and tip hold the heaviest part of your tray closest to your body
and lastly CLEAN your tables, no clean tables, means no new tables which means NO TIPS lol
Other than that just be friendly, attentive (not to attentive, gets annoying) and have fun you'll be fine.
Serving is a fun job, has its ups and definatly it's downs but you'll make good money. GOOD LUCK!
